Amigos, por fin, se conjugaron tiempo y espacio para ver CODA: Los sonidos del silencio, la tan aclamada y polémica ganadora del Óscar a mejor película del año pasado. Este largometraje es emotivo y tiene como tópico central: la inclusión social de las personas con alguna discapacidad, sin dejar de lado, el amor y la unión familiar. Aquí podremos observar una reflexión acerca de quiénes somos a partir de las relaciones con los demás. El producto es una versión de la cinta francesa La familia Bélier, una comedia romántica que fue dirigida en el 2014 por Éric Lartigau y escrita por Victoria Bedos. Lo que tenemos en nuestras manos es “casi” una copia de aquella.
Un dato que me pareció curioso fue el nombre de la película, por lo que investigué al respecto. En inglés se usan esas cuatro letras porque son las iniciales de Child of Deaf Adults, lo que forma la palabra CODA, término que se emplea para referirse al hijo de personas sordas. Por tanto, estamos frente a un acrónimo, esta información era desconocida para mí. No tengo dudas de que diariamente se aprende en el vasto mundo del conocimiento.
Nos encontramos ante un argumento sencillo, una familia de pescadores sorda que tiene dificultades de adaptación. El padre y el hermano mayor son los encargados de manejar las redes, pero la hija adolescente de 17 años (Rudy), por ser la única que escucha, es la intérprete. Ella tiene un rol valioso, es el vehículo comunicativo que guía la negociación en el muelle. Rudy se siente responsable de proteger a su estirpe para evitar la discriminación. Además, tiene una gran responsabilidad, debe mantener el equilibrio entre la escuela y el trabajo. La chica descubre que tiene el don del canto y con la ayuda de un tutor perfecciona tales habilidades y desea incursionar en una carrera universitaria.
Friends, time and space have finally been combined to see CODA: The Sounds of Silence, the highly acclaimed and controversial Oscar winner for best film last year. This feature film is emotional and has as its central topic: the social inclusion of people with disabilities, without neglecting love and family unity. Here we can observe a reflection about who we are based on relationships with others. The product is a version of the French film The Bélier Family, a romantic comedy that was directed in 2014 by Éric Lartigau and written by Victoria Bedos. What we have in our hands is "almost" a copy of it.
A fact that seemed curious to me was the name of the film, so I investigated about it. In English, these four letters are used because they are the initials of Child of Deaf Adults, which forms the word CODA, a term used to refer to the child of deaf people. Therefore, we are dealing with an acronym, this information was unknown to me. I have no doubt that you learn daily in the vast world of knowledge.
We are faced with a simple plot, a family of deaf fishermen who have difficulties adapting. The father and older brother are in charge of managing the networks, but the 17-year-old teenage daughter (Rudy), being the only one who listens, is the interpreter. She has a valuable role, she is the communicative vehicle that guides the negotiation on the dock. Rudy feels responsible for protecting his lineage to avoid discrimination. In addition, he has a great responsibility, he must maintain a balance between school and work. The girl discovers that she has the gift of singing and with the help of a tutor she perfects those skills and wishes to enter a university career.
La directora y guionista Sian Heder le coloca su sello personal a este film con ligeros cambios, su enfoque se basa en las complejidades que afronta una familia sorda en cuanto a su trabajo y relaciones personales. Se hace evidente que la película busca conmover al público, lo cual logra de manera eficaz. La elección del elenco y su excelente desenvolvimiento afianzaron tal propósito.
El hecho de que sus personajes son sordos ayudó al impacto en el Festival de Cine de Sundance y a las múltiples reproducciones, lo cual le dio mucha verosimilitud y un toque genuino. Y, por supuesto, ante la necesidad de comunicación existente, el sonido se convierte en un elemento clave para intensificar cada escena. Aquí resalta el trabajo de Marius de Vries, encargado de la banda sonora, por realizar la selección de las canciones y efectos de audio acordes a cada situación.
El trabajo de Emilia Jones como Ruby es bastante bueno, se desenvuelve con mucha naturalidad. Una revelación en el universo cinematográfico. Esta actriz aprendió lenguaje de señas para representar su papel, lo cual me parece plausible. Su hermano mayor Leo (Daniel Durant) aporta lo esencial de su caracterización para el desarrollo de la trama, evidenciándose una química extraordinaria en la familia. El personaje de Bernardo Villalobos es llevado por el mexicano Eugenio Derbez, quien exhibe carisma. Interpreta muy bien al buscador de talentos, es exigente pero de corazón noble.
Por otro lado, Troy Kotsur (mejor actor de reparto), personifica a Frank, el padre, quien tiene diversos giros cómicos en la historia, sacándole al espectador una que otra sonrisa, brilla cada vez que aparece. La madre es la ganadora del Óscar Marlee Matlin (Te amaré en silencio), su personaje se llama Jackie y destaca en pantalla. La personalidad de ambos es relajada, sin complejos, siendo el uno para el otro porque comparten su felicidad.

It becomes clear that the film seeks to move the audience, which it does effectively. The choice of the cast and its excellent development strengthened such purpose.
The fact that its characters are deaf helped its impact at the Sundance Film Festival and multiple plays, giving it a lot of verisimilitude and a genuine edge. And, of course, given the existing need for communication, sound becomes a key element to intensify each scene. Here the work of Marius de Vries, in charge of the soundtrack, stands out for selecting the songs and audio effects according to each situation.
Emilia Jones's work as Ruby is quite good, she unfolds very naturally. A revelation in the cinematic universe. This actress learned sign language to play her role, which seems plausible to me. His older brother Leo (Daniel Durant) contributes the essence of his characterization for the development of the plot, showing an extraordinary chemistry in the family. Es evidente que se resalta el valor del trabajo. El esfuerzo físico que deben hacer para poder subsistir. Un punto sobresaliente es la unión familiar. El ambiente laboral es agradable a pesar de las carencias, así aluden al refrán: “Al mal tiempo, buena cara”, teniendo una actitud positiva para resolver los conflictos. Siempre habrá limitaciones, pero la familia sale adelante de forma honrada, consiguiendo el respeto y la admiración de otras personas.
Apreciamos, entonces, una historia que sirve de inspiración. La película nos muestra cómo afecta a una adolescente hacerse cargo de su familia, lo que se persigue es que todos los miembros puedan sentirse importantes y aceptados en sociedad. Esta gran responsabilidad implica algunos obstáculos para perseguir sus propios sueños.
De allí otro mensaje: la superación personal. El deseo de la protagonista es asistir a la universidad para tener un futuro del cual sentirse orgullosa. Es aquí cuando entra en una disyuntiva: abandonar sus aspiraciones personales como cantante o continuar ayudando a su familia. Resulta una paradoja que se dedique a este oficio y estos nunca puedan disfrutar de su talento. Razón por la cual es cuestionada. Solo el corazón le dará las respuestas para hacer lo que considera adecuado, sin dañar a nadie.

We appreciate, then, a story that serves as an inspiration. The film shows us how it affects a teenager to take charge of her family, what is pursued is that all members can feel important and accepted in society. This great responsibility implies some obstacles to pursue your own dreams.
Hence another message: self-improvement. The protagonist's wish is to attend college to have a future to be proud of. It is here when he enters into a dilemma: abandon his personal aspirations as a singer or continue helping his family. It is a paradox that he dedicates himself to this profession and they can never enjoy his talent. Reason for which it is questioned. Only the heart will give him the answers to do what he considers appropriate, without harming anyone.
En este punto, es necesario señalar que la película nos muestra otro tema polémico, pero muy actual: el desenfreno sexual de Frank y Jackie (la mejor amiga de Ruby), lo cual aparece muy natural y sin reservas. Dejando claro que para la juventud lo fundamental es el placer y no el amor, absortos en un concepto desvirtuado de realidad. Igualmente, los padres manejan su sexualidad de forma jocosa y sin ningún tabú.
Caso aparte es lo que sucede con Rudy y su forma de ver la vida, existe un matiz romántico planteado inocentemente, un enamoramiento rosa, un cliché de otras propuestas llevadas a la pantalla. La chica se enamora de un compañero del coro, la afinidad se concreta porque hacen un dueto musical y, a partir de allí, pasan mucho tiempo juntos. Otro aderezo para regalar diversos matices con los cuales entretener y divertir.
En definitiva, CODA: Los sonidos del silencio nos ofrece un drama familiar con un guion sencillo que tiene algunos diálogos elocuentes, elementos que terminaron conquistando a la audiencia, sin embargo, para mí no es suficiente. No niego que disfruté algunos guiños divertidos, pero su principal misión es conmover, más allá de eso, no hallo nada extraordinario, su construcción narrativa es convencional. Con lo que sí cuenta la película es con excelentes actuaciones. Está hecha para agradar, pero no para ser la ganadora del Óscar. A fin de cuentas, en ningún momento, se está premiando la originalidad, pues le dieron el galardón a un remake.

In short, CODA: The Sounds of Silence offers us a family drama with a simple script that has some eloquent dialogues, elements that ended up conquering the audience, however, for me it is not enough. I do not deny that I enjoyed some funny winks, but its main mission is to move, beyond that, I do not find anything extraordinary, its narrative construction is conventional. What the film does have is excellent performances. It is made to please, but not to be the winner of the Oscar. After all, at no time is originality being rewarded, since they gave the award to a remake.
