Double feature: Prey - Bottoms [Review]

PREY

"Prey" is a movie that I had on my watch list since last year, but honestly I hadn't given it enough importance, even so, I knew that despite not knowing the other movies in the "Predator" franchise, it would be worth it as a refreshing take on a simple and timeless premise.

And Prey (Directed by Dan Trachtenberg) is a perfect example of the "less is more" philosophy, transporting us to a setting where dialogues and traditional exposition take a backseat to give way to minimalist direction and photography, in where we follow the story of a young Comanche who tries to demonstrate her skills as a hunter, although the tribe that surrounds her is determined to keep her as just another healer... all this will change with the arrival of an extraterrestrial creature that will endanger her entire family. population, and which in turn will represent the perfect opportunity to demonstrate the value of the young indigenous woman.

Come? Everything is quite simple. The appeal of Prey lies in the striking nature of its action, which mixes beautiful passages with ingenious battle choreography, demonstrations of excessive violence that overflow with ingenuity and progressively make us fall in love more and more.

It is surprising that with so little we can convey so much, we can connect with each of the characters and the dynamics they maintain with each other.

Bottoms

We must admit that in recent years raunchy comedies have gained quite a bit of strength, films like the recent No Hard Feelings, Joy Ride, or the iconic modern classic Booksmart demonstrate that in today's cinema there is still a space for this type of works, especially when they decide embrace the sensibilities that characterize the society of the 2020s.

Within this whole trend Bottoms had the potential to be one of the best exponents and I think he lived up to our expectations,

Directed by Emma Seligman, we are faced with a comedy that pays tribute to the entire genre but at the same time is capable of reinventing it in very ingenious ways, serving as a coming of age story that addresses lesbianism in adolescence in a realistic way, and that introduces us to a set of organic and pleasant characters.

In bottoms we follow the story of a couple of friends who decide to start a self-defense club in a high school with the aim of meeting girls and having sex, starring Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott "Bottoms" is probably the most reminiscent thing I have ever seen to Super Bad so far this decade.

"Prey" es una película que tenía en mi lista de pendientes desde el año pasado, pero honestamente no le había dado suficiente importancia, aún así, sabía que a pesar de desconocer las demás películas de la franquicia "Depredador", valdría la pena como una visión refrescante de una premisa simple y atemporal.

Y es que Prey (Dirigida por Dan Trachtenberg) es una muestra perfecta de la filosofía "menos en más", transportandonos a un setting en dónde los diálogos y la exposición tradicional toman el asiento trasero para darle paso a una dirección y fotografía minimalista, en dónde seguimos la historia de una joven Comanche que intenta demostrar sus habilidades de cazadora, aunque la tribu que le rodea está empeñada en mantenerla como una curandera más... todo esto cambiará con la llegada de una criatura extraterrestre que pondrá en peligro a toda su población, y que a su vez representará la oportunidad perfecta para demostrar el valor de la joven indígena.

¿Ven? Todo es bastante simple. El atractivo de Prey radica en la naturaleza tan llamativa de su acción, que mezcla pasajes hermosos con ingeniosas coreografias de batalla, demostraciones de violencia desmedida que desbordan ingenio y progresivamente nos van enamorando más y más.

Es sorprendente que con tan poco nos logre transmitir tanto, podemos conectar con cada uno de los personajes y las dinámicas que mantienen entre si.

Debemos admitir que estos últimos años las raunchy comedies han tomado bastante fuerza, películas como la reciente No Hard Feelings, joy Ride, o el icónico clásico moderno Booksmart demuestran que en el cine actual sigue habiendo un espacio para este tipo de obras, especialmente cuando deciden abrazar las sensibilidades que caracterizan la sociedad de los 2020s.

Dentro de toda esta corriente Bottoms tenía el potencial para ser uno de los mejores exponentes y creo que cumplió con nuestras expectativas,

Dirigida por Emma Seligman estamos frente a una comedia que rinde homenaje a todo el género pero que a la vez es capaz de reinventarlo en formas muy ingeniosas, sirviendo como una coming of age story que aborda el lesbianismo en la adolescencia de forma realista, y que nos presenta a un conjunto de personajes orgánicos y agradables.

En bottoms seguimos la historia de un par de amigas que deciden iniciar un club de defensa personal en una escuela secundario con la finalidad de conocer chicas y tener sexo, protagonizada por Ayo Edebiri y Rachel Sennott "Bottoms" es probablemente lo más reminiscente que he visto a Super Bad en lo que va de década.
