Zoey 102 recently premiered, a sort of Paramount+ movie/special created as a follow-up to Zoey 101, an iconic Nickelodeon live-action series produced by the controversial Dan Schneider in the early 00s.
Personally, I must admit that at the time I liked this teenager series a lot, not only because I fit perfectly in its target, but because I genuinely believed that it was full of quality, had well-constructed characters and, despite having a rather silly and simplistic style, it broke with the ordinary scheme of sitcoms and presented us with a slightly more "serious" drama.
For this very reason, I feel it's a bit overwhelming trying to make an opinion about Zoey 102, a movie that manages to reunite a sizable portion of the cast many, many years later, but fails to capture what made the original show so great.
In the same way, I try to be reasonable, and I understand that although this series used to fit very well with the tastes that I had at that time, as a person my interests have evolved and now I look for things in art and entertainment that are very different from what I I was looking for when I was 9 years old.
Ironically, despite this it is important to recognize that there is still a missed opportunity. Why? Because all the time that elapsed could have been used as a pretext to review the original material, putting these iconic characters in a situation that, like the series, would allow us to see ourselves reflected in the story that we would be about to see.
Instead we get a formulaic romantic comedy, which if it didn't have such a close association with recognizable intellectual property wouldn't even be worth a chance to watch for fun.
We follow Zoey Brooks, a young woman who works in the entertainment industry and feels a little frustrated by multiple failures in her romantic life... Zoey receives an invitation from her friend Quinn to attend her wedding as a bridesmaid, although Zoey finds herself a little reticent considering that Chase, her old high school sweetheart, is also attending, and it's clear that after so many years she's not quite over it.
The first thing I have to admit is that I really like this premise, because first, it's an opportunity to give prominence to one of the most interesting dynamics of the show (Quinn and Logan's relationship), and, apart from that, it seeks to give it a kind of resolution to the iconic cliff-hanger between Zoey and Chase.
Pretending that much more could be done with this story (as if it were a complex HBO drama) is absurd, so I accept that at least conceptually this idea was correct.
The problem is that far from taking advantage of the nostalgia and our previous knowledge of these characters to create a simple and fun adventure where we see them face adulthood, Zoey 102 is much more determined to make us deal with new characters that, not only are not interesting, but also break a tone that might have been nice without them.
One of the most enjoyable scenes in the entire movie occurs when the group of friends decides to go to a bar to celebrate, it is not particularly important for the plot, but it serves as an organic implementation of fan service, it allows us to embrace the maturity of all these familiar faces and, in a certain way, mimics the feeling we experienced in our childhood when we saw them coexist.
Other than that Zoey 102 doesn't have much going for it, the dialogue is painful to listen to, it's not recorded in a visually pleasing way, and it drags on longer than necessary.

Personalmente, debo admitir que en su momento esta serie para adolescentes me gustaba mucho, no solo porque yo encajaba perfectamente en su target, sino porque genuinamente creía que era de calidad, contaba con personajes bien construidos y, a pesar de tener un humor bastante tonto y simplista, rompía con el esquema ordinario de las sitcom y nos planteaba un drama un poco más "serio".
Por esto mismo siento que es un poco abrumador tratar de emitir una opinión respecto a Zoey 102, una película que logra reunir a una porción considerable del cast muchísimos años después, pero que fracasa al momento de capturar aquello que hizo que el show original fuese tan agradable.
De la misma forma intento ser razonable, y entiendo que si bien esta serie solía enmarcarse muy bien en los gustos que yo tenía en esa época, como persona mis intereses han evolucionado y ahora busco en el arte y el entretenimiento cosas muy distintas a las que buscaba cuando tenía 9 años.
Irónicamente, a pesar de esto es importante reconocer que sigue existiendo una oportunidad perdida, ¿Por qué? Porque todo el tiempo transcurrido podría haberse usado como pretexto para revisar el material original, poniendo a estos iconicos personajes en una situación que al igual que la serie nos permitiera vernos reflejado en la historia que estaríamos a punto de ver.
En cambio tenemos una comedia romántica formulaíca, que si no tuviese una asociación tan estrecha a una propiedad intelectual reconocible ni siquiera merecería una oportunidad de verla por diversión.
Seguimos a Zoey Brooks, una joven que trabaja en la industria del entretenimiento y se siente un poco frustrada por múltiples fracasos en su vida romántica... Zoey recibe una invitación por parte de su amiga Quinn para asistir a su boda como dama de honor, aunque Zoey se encuentra un poco reticente considerando que Chase, su antiguo amor de la preparatoria, también asistirá, y es evidente que luego de tantos años no lo ha superado del todo.
Lo primero que debo admitir es que en realidad me gusta esta premisa, porque primero, es una oportunidad para darle protagonismo a una de las dinámicas más interesantes del show (La relación de Quinn y Logan), y, aparte, busca darle una suerte de resolución al icónico cliff-hanger entre Zoey y Chase.
Pretender que se podía hacer mucho más con esta historia (como si se tratase de un complejo drama de HBO) es absurdo, así que acepto que al menos conceptualmente está idea era acertada.
El problema es que lejos de aprovechar la nostalgia y nuestros conocimientos previos de estos personajes para crear una aventura simple y divertida en dónde los veamos afrontar la adultez, Zoey 102 se encuentra mucho más empeñada en hacernos convivir con nuevos personajes que, no solo no resultan interesantes, sino que aparte rompen un tono que podría haber Sido agradable sin ellos.
Una de las escenas más disfrutables de toda la película ocurre cuando el grupo de amigos decide acudir a un bar a celebrar, no es especialmente importante para la trama, pero sirve como una orgánica implementación de fan service, nos deja abrazar la madurez de todas estas caras familiares y, en cierta forma, se mímica la sensación que experimentamos en nuestra infancia cuando los veíamos coexistir.
Aparte de esto Zoey 102 no tiene mucho que ofrecer, los diálogos son dolorosos de escuchar, no está grabada en una forma visualmente agradable y se alarga más de lo necesario.
