Hello, Hivians, and welcome to another movie review from me. Last Saturday, in an attempt to relax as my doctor ordered , I decided to hop on the Paramount Plus new crime drama series, Mobland. I think the series kicks off in the early part of May, but I am not quite sure. Either way, I have been one of the long-awaited fans of this series, although I had to tell myself, just wait until all the episodes are out so you can binge the entire season, still I must say it was quite hard for me as I never been the person with the strength to undergo a weekly suspense while waiting a whole week for another episode.
After all ten episodes were dropped, it was go time. The series is focused on the Irish crime family known as the Harrigans, and they are set to destroy one another while still battling against a rival family, the Stevensons.
From the gradual unveiling of actions and the character flaws of the heads of the Harrigan family, played by Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren as his wife, Mrs Harrigan, you can tell Guy Ritchie was the director. His works tend to lend towards organized crime drama, like his work on The Gentleman series on Netflix and The Gentleman, the movie. So believe it when I say Mobland is one of his best works. Fully equipped with suspense, unforeseen twists, action, rivalry, and I do not even get me started with Tom Hardy's brilliant performance in the role of Harry Da Souza.
Down to the main point in the title
It takes one person to bring it down.
There is a popular adage that talks about how you can spend your lifetime building an empire of wealth, and it only takes an untrained child to squander it all in one night. Well, that is the case in this movie, but it wasn't a child but an elderly woman in the person of Mrs Harrigan.
Mrs Harrigan, who got pregnant young for her husband, Mr Harrigan, grew up as a tough Irish woman who only understands the life of battle, an eye for an eye, when you see a problem, you take it out for good and make sure it stays six feet under. Her husband even said that she pointed a gun at him when they were young and told him that if he failed to provide for her and their child, she would put him in the ground.
Now you get a glimpse of what a woman she is. This ideology about life is how she successfully built her husband and their family into one of the most powerful organized crime families in London. Then things changed when her husband got comfortable with his wealth and power. She no longer gets the adrenaline rush that comes with war against another family for territory or new business, as her husband is only focused on his portfolio, fishing, and how to make more money by bringing in new business.
This feeling of dissatisfaction drives her to start a war with the rival family, the Stevensons, with the help of her grandson, whom she raised into a monster just like her husband. And that is not all, the plot twist gets even better. She gives bad advice to her husband, making him feel he has become weak for people like Mr Stevenson to disrespect at will without any form of repercussion. As you move forward with the series, you begin to see how her hatred runs deep for the promiscuity Mr Harrigan has committed with his loose pants and many women.
This is why I say it takes one person to bring it down, and that person is Mrs Harrigan. She is devious with her plans that are poorly calculated, all because she wants people to feel her wrath when they disrespect her, but fails to see the long-term aftermath of her actions.
If this is not enough to get you going with the series, then watch out for Tom Hardy and how he cleans up the Harrigan family mess. Tom plays Harry, a fixer for the Harrigan family, but he is way too smart for all this family drama. While the Harrigans are busy belittling one another, Harry is being approached by powerful people who want to make a move on the Harrigans and kick them out of business for good.
Harry is faced with multiple accounts of loyalty tests, and it even gets more intense as Mrs Harrigan begins to plant doubt in the family about Harry. While Harry is busy attending to the many unveiling problems caused by the Harrigans, his family is on the verge of collapse. The man is caught between a rock and a hard place, but how he remains cool-headed is remarkable.
Go watch Mobland if you haven't already. Guy Ritchie is the best director when it comes to organized crime drama series.
