I decided to relax with Prime's newest edition of movies to the collection of movies they already had. Crime 101 is a heist drama that focuses on crime, as the name suggests. It is different, but the feeling of the entire setting to the plot all felt similar. Yes, there is a movie about robberies, carried out by a robber, but this time the robbery is of valuable jewels and diamonds.
It was not entirely strange to me, as I have watched several movies about robberies, and I know the memo. There is a robber, an accomplice who gets involved, and a detective with issues who is trying to solve the case. I have to be honest when I say the strong suit for this movie is in its cast. A lineup of Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and Halle Berry, also Barry Keoghan, was among the cast. If you do not remember him, he is the one who played Duke Shelby in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, which I reviewed previously.
Also, I think Mark Ruffalo got typecast again in this movie as he plays the detective with issues who hunts the robber, just like he did in the HBO series Task. I hope this is not going to be his new memo in movies now. Although I also have to admit is pretty good at playing such a role.
The movie centers on a series of armed robberies, but what makes these robberies unique is the methods used. It is well calculated, and above all, nobody gets hurt, only jewels and valuables that go missing. This goes to prove the kind of person the robber is. He is one who is concerned about doing a clean job that leaves no trace, especially human life. Therefore, he does his best to stay one step ahead by having all the information before he makes a move. This method of robbery is what makes the movie captivating and strings you along in the sense that you want to know what happens next. That is not all, we also get to experience two sides of a story. One from the angle of the robber and the other from the detective. As expected, since it is Mark Ruffalo who plays the detective, he gets obsessed with the task, but what eats him up is the bureaucracy he has to deal with at work and his failing marriage.
All this and more add up to the plot of the movie. It also gets interesting when there is another robbery, but the memo for this robbery was totally different from the previous ones, too chaotic, and lacked precision. This makes the detective certain that it is not his guy but the bureaucracy at work what him nail the guy that appeared on the CCTV as the robber. This comes with issues for him to deal with as well.
The most iconic thing about this movie is how everybody is dealing with one issue or another, but there is one problem everybody has in common, and that is money. An interesting statement from Halle Berry when she said that at age 45 and above, the definition of happiness is based on financial security. This builds the room that money is a strong motivation for the crime, but the first thing is not to get cut and that is the crime 101.
