Being a fan of the series, from season 1 down to season 6, it was highly normal for us, the fans of the Peaky Blinders, to expect so much from the movie itself that just came to Netflix on the 20th of March. The wait, hype, and entire production for the movie were worth it, as it came in with a banger. The plot deepened, with more meaning and a passing of leadership from Tommy Shelby to his son.
The lead character, Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, has unique characteristics attached to the entire genesis of the plot for the movie. Tommy carries a lot of burden down from the deaths and the tragedies he has experienced in the war and his life. I even discovered through the podcast on the making of the movie, that the trauma the men of that time experienced was not referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), rather it was referred to as Shell Shock, and the worst part is there was no cure or any form of therapy. Given it was in the 19th century, a lot was different compared to now. Men were seen as figures who were meant to head off to war in order to prove their existence as men. Hence, what led Tommy and his brothers to serve as well. Although it is said that about 700,000 men never returned from this war, the Shelbys were fortunate to be among the ones that returned, and that is how they built the Birmingham gang, The Peaky Blinders.
There is more to be learned about this gang and how they are tied to the existence of the Shelby family through the series, but the entirety of the 2026 movie, The Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, is based on the return of Tommy Shelby for one last time to save his son, Duke Shelby. Duke gets himself involved with some pretty bad men who have ties to the Nazi regime, and they plan to win the war by bankrupting the European economy by injecting fake pounds note into the British economy. This is what led to Duke getting involved, as he is the one in charge of the gang at the moment since Tommy left to deal with his demons and write his book. It was simple for Duke since he stood to gain 70 million pounds from his hijacking of the cash and using his gang to inject the money into the economy. But soon enough, it became obvious that Duke was only being used as a body remover, who gets rid of anybody who stood to disrupt the plan. In no time, things became rough as the deaths began to come in.
The deepening part of the plot is that it is not just about the rescue of Duke from his own doing and ruthless management of the gang, but it is also about the passing down of legacy and identity. What would happen once Tommy was gone, and how strong would the family be when Tommy is no longer around? This is what kept me glued to my screen as I kept watching to see how things would unfold. Nobody said it was going to be easy for Tommy to find peace, and after everything was done, it became obvious that this man Tommy Shelby is living with a whole lot and just needs peace. If you have watched the series Peaky Blinders, you should go watch the movie, The Immortal Man.
