This is not my type of movie from when I saw it on trailer although it Lisan al Gaib playing ping pong so I had to watch, besides he ran for the Oscar on this one so why not, it turn out to be good, not a movie I would watch over and over but still a cool watch. Marty Supreme sounds like a total banger that I was not expecting after all the drama that went down with the Safdie brothers going their separate ways, but Josh Safdie is out here doing his own thing and it looks like he is about to drop a movie that hits hard as iron, even though the whole story is basically about a dude playing table tennis in the fifties which sounds like some goofy trash when you first hear it, but then you see that Timothee Chalamet is the lead and you realize this is going to be something legit because that guy is one of the best actors working today, and he plays this shoe salesman named Marty Reisman who is absolutely convinced that he is the greatest player to ever pick up a paddle and the movie builds the story of his life as he goes from being a hustler in New York to a global star who treats everyone around him like they are just obstacles or pawns in his game, and I am telling you the energy in the trailer alone is enough to make you feel like you are in a war zone because Safdie has this way of making everything feel fast and frantic, and it reminds me so much of the vibe from Uncut Gems where you are just exhausted when it ended, was a full rush but in a good way because the tension is just that fkn intense.

Now here is the thing about Marty because he is not exactly a nice guy and he is actually kind of a despicable character who only cares about winning and being the center of attention, short answer the guy is kinda of an asshole but that is exactly what makes the movie so interesting because you are watching this singular guy who has this insane talent but his personality is a complete mess and Chalamet looks like he is going full maniac with the role which is a dope change of pace from the more serious stuff he has been doing lately and on top he has some insane supporting cast including Gwyneth Paltrow who is making a big return to the screen and Tyler the Creator who was a cool adition to see him in a real movie and even Kevin O'Leary from Shark Tank shows up which is just weird as hell but it fits the whole chaotic energy that Safdie is going for with this project, when he tells Marty "Im a Vampire..." and Marty just laughs and does what ever the F he wants, Odessa Aion is the real standout here because she has to hold her own against Chalamet when he is being a total dick and the way they interact on screen is supposed to be one of the best parts of the whole movie and it really shows that they put a lot of effort into the casting to make sure every single person on screen has something interesting going on, and it makes me feel like this is a solid win for A24 catalog, they always know how to pick these unique stories that people online are going to be talking about for months.
The production quality looks insane because they got Darius Khondji doing the cinematography and he is a legend who makes everything look beautiful and expensive, and the background music is just dope adding to the levels of intensity with this jazzy and upbeat feel that matches the fast pace of the 50s setting and you can tell they did not cheap out on the sets or the costumes because everything looks so authentic to the period, Im not from that era but it just feels that way and I was worried that the movie would just be a boring sports story but Safdie turns ping pong or as other know it "table tennis" into this high stakes drama where every point feels like a life or death situation and the way the camera moves around the table is just so fkn cool to watch, it really drives the point that Marty is a man who is obsessed with perfection and will do anything to stay at the top of his game even if it means destroying his personal relationships along the way and the movie handles this by showing how his ego is both his greatest strength and his biggest weakness, you see him spiraling as he tries to maintain his status while the world around him is changing, it is a wild ride that keeps you interested during the entire movie and this is exactly why I take risks with movies that I might not like or look like so because you can find gems, not that it was not already but from the marketing campaign this is a movie that 80% most of the time I would not watch.
I was not expecting this movie to look so good but Josh Safdie has proven that he can handle the pressure of going solo and he still has that spark that made his earlier work so great, some of the ones I remember and like "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You" and "Uncut Gems", and the fact that he chose such a weird subject as professional pingpong just shows how much he likes to challenge himself and the audience, and it even feels weird to see a biopic that does not feel like it is just checking boxes or trying to win awards or just trying to list the main character stories one by one or even feel crunch, its just smooth like any other movie like he didnt over think it, it just feels like a raw and honest look at a guy who was probably his own worst enemy. If you havent watch it yet just wait for it to hit streaming, the aprox date given at the moment is April 24 on HBO Max, you should keep an eye on this one because it is a complete package experience with a lot of action and the drama even considering its a biopic, and it makes me wonder what else Safdie might have for future projects because having Chalamet almost carry this movie on this shoulder was a great idea besides that the guy is ON for the past years just alone with the Dune movies. Still makes me wonder why more directors do not take risks like this because it is so much more rewarding than watching another generic sequel or some trashy reboot that nobody asked for in the first place,, there are so so many stories out there that havent touch the big screen but I guess it also has to do with corporate, at least it gives me hope for the future of cinema when you have guys like this who are still willing to do something different and weird, btw you see movies like this and you have to think that the is a lot to happen before Ai takes over movies, yes some directors are getting their feet wet but you cant make this up right now, you cant make a Marty Supreme out of Ai, text to video.
