Welcome 馃挅 Bienvenidos
! [English Version]
There are many films about the painful and horrific experiences of war, but very few convey a message of love, hope, friendship and faith. Today鈥檚 review focuses on these qualities embodied in a single man and how his attitude in the face of adversity changed the lives of others, serving as an example of courage and love for one鈥檚 fellow man. The most interesting thing about this film is that it is based on real events that took place during the Second World War, inspired in part by the life of Desmond T. Doss.Hacksaw Ridge is a 2016 war drama that I watched a few months ago; at first I thought it was a fictional story because Desmond T. Doss鈥檚 attitude and strength of character seemed incredible to me. Starring Andrew Garfield as Desmond T. Doss, with Luke Bracey as
Smitty Ryker and Vince Vaughn as Sergeant Howell, this film boasted a first-rate cast.Doss fell head over heels in love when he met a nurse and decided to win her over by any means necessary. It was wartime, and donating blood was his first idea for getting close to her, so he went to her workplace several days in a row to give blood; obviously, it wasn鈥檛 possible, but that鈥檚 how he managed to get closer to her. A very beautiful story of mutual love: they married and started a family, but a war broke out in which his brother enlisted and he decided to support the war, but in a different way, by saving lives, so he trained as a doctor, studied anatomy and, whilst doing so, also drew closer to religion; every day he became more devoted to Jesus Christ and his life.
For that reason, the hardest test he overcame was remaining steadfast in his decision not to touch a weapon. Whilst in the battalion, he was forced to carry one, as it stands to reason that in battle he could be an easy target and endanger his comrades, since without a weapon he could not defend himself or others; yet he resisted, suffered intimidation from other soldiers and his superiors, was court-martialled, but remained steadfast in his decision; after all, he simply wanted to save lives as a medic, and for that he did not need to carry a rifle.
There is a part of the film where his decision and his stubborn refusal to carry a rifle begin to seem ridiculous, as he endured much mistreatment with honour; there are parts of the film that remind me of scenes from The Passion of the Christ.
The real action comes at the end, when they find themselves on the battlefield of Okinawa Island, in Japan, and have to climb a mountain and face the enemy; there, God gave Doss the chance to prove his mettle and for his comrades to see his warrior spirit; he survived and, without firing a single bullet, also saved 75 people from death. Thanks to his inner strength, courage and determination, he managed to save many on his own and did not rest until he had found the last man; he even helped several Japanese soldiers who were the enemy.
This is a film that will make you question reality; you won鈥檛 be able to believe all the hardships this man went through to save others鈥攖he very same people who mistreated, beat and intimidated him; he went from being the butt of jokes to a hero. Although it is a story set in the last century, at first the cinematography transports you to that era, but then you feel the story as if it were happening today. The setting I liked best was the battlefield, and the make-up added all the drama needed to make a real impact.
It is a beautiful film to watch with the family and to inspire young people, in which we can see how war and religion clash and, at the same time, come together.
