Hello you, movie lovers and review fans!
In one of my previous blogs I mentioned that I am not a big fan of colder weather or the rain, but it does come with some perks. Such as more time at home, to read a book or two, watch movies, all while wrapped up in a comfy blanket and with a cup of warm tea or mulled vine (if the kid is asleep).
This time we watched light and funny, true weekend movie, that recently came out, so let's see if it's any good. Be aware that there will be some spoilers.
- Title: Enola Holmes
- Year: 2020.
- Genre: Adventure | Crime | Drama | Mystery
- Directed by: Harry Bradbeer
- Running time: 2h 3 min
The Plot
As you can assume from the title of the movie, being a well known surname Holmes it has do to something with detective's work field. Enola is introduced to us as a free spirited younger sister of famous Sherlock Holmes, who was raised by an even more quirkier mother.
The development of the story begins when her mother is gone missing, some would say without a clue, but it wouldn't be a true detective stories if there is no clue, right? Enola and her older brothers must meet again, after a long time, in efforts to find their mother.
One of the brothers is mentioned Sherlock, elegant and calm, understanding and loving brother and the other one is Mycroft Holmes, represented as harsh, full of money and quite short tempered when it comes to Enola and her mother.
If you liked Stranger Things you will love this new role that Millie Bobby Brown is playing here as our main character. She is in direct contact with the audience and she is also very determined to find her mother. Using her wits and capabilities that run in the family, she begins a quest on her own, finding clues her mother left and escaping the life her brother has in mind for her.
On the way to London, in search of her mother she not only encounters a very special character later revealed as one of Lords of the London House, but she also saved his life that was under a threat from a hired assassin.
The road to her mother makes her go through many adventures, including a complete style reformation, new friends, while we discover why her mother raised her the way she did. She knows martial arts, has money and healthy mind, that leads he closer to mother but also the young Lord she met on the train. The story begins to bubble up, when we discover that her mother is possibly a part of Resistance Movement and that it's up to Lord and Enola, to stay alive and pass the vote in the Council.
My impressions
The movie is quite childish and interesting, full of witty conversations and clues. Teenage loves and familiar plots. I am a big fan of strong woman characters, and I would love if my step-daughter would see the movie.
Enola, spelled backwards is Alone, leaving us on her side the whole time. Millie Bobby Brown did a great job portraying a young, free spirited woman, that's not quite fitting in any society, especially England in that time. She is intelligent and superior, even in relation with her famous brother.
The movie is light, funny and keeps the attention. It's not overly dramatic, even with over two hours of watch-time. It has that old-time feeling to it, but most importantly a message that should be heard in any time period, and that is a power of women's voice. It's not overwhelming, the main character is still represented as someone who is capable to wear coresets and still kick your but. Familiar crew and light humor, takes this movie to another, more pleasant level while you have a chance to think about how hard can it be to be a woman.
With Love,
Tamara
