Hello you, movie lovers and review fans!
It's me again, with a new review of not such a recent movie, but fresh enough at least for me. It's not unfamiliar story and Disney made it, so again, I thought it would be childish for sure. But I was pleasantly surprised.
Be aware that there will be some spoilers!
- Title: Mulan
- Year: 2020.
- Genre: Action | Adventure | Drama | Family
- Directed by: Niki Caro
- Running time: 1h 55
The Plot
Story of Mulan is well known, it's about a girl that pretends to be a boy and joins the army. But there is so much more behind the character. She was represented as a capable and skilled child, with strong Chi, as they would say. But with one big fault, she is a girl.
Girls only job is to get married and be a good wife. That role is so unsuited for Mulan, that even the make up she has to wear to meet with matchmaker looks a bit off.
Her father is summoned to join the war and there is one of my favorite scene from the movie, where he takes out his old sword and sharpens it in preparation for battle. Here I saw the birth of a soldier in Mulan. She stole the armor from her father and joined the army pretending to be a male.
We also get to meet another strong female character, who used her Chi for wrong purpose. Later reveled how she felt casted away like Mulan and showing there are only two paths a strong woman can choose. I personally loved her.
In battle Mulan discovers her true strength lies in her hidden feminine side and fully unleashes her power and skills. She is determined to save the Emperor and her soldier buddies join her on this quest.
She saves the Dynasty, with amazing battle scenes and a bit of romance appears, as it should in Disney movie. She is offered a position in the Guard, but chooses to redeem herself to her family first. Showing us once again some values that should be primary.
My impressions
I love the fact that when you Google Mulan, she is one of Disney princesses. Her unusual appearance and stubborn personality, the fact that she passed for a man in army, looks nothing like princesses are represented usually.
What kept my attention was certainly the quality of production and scenes. It's artistic, a bit bollywood, a bit like Prince of Persia, with amazing colors, fighting scenes and strong characters.
One of my favorite characters is the Witch who was Mulan enemy and the one who looked most like her. She was deeply wounded and rejected based only on the fact that she is a female. We got an opportunity to learn on her example that honesty and values can lead you to right path, even when you started on a wrong foot.
Overall, I liked the movie and the the message it carried, especially for young girls. As always I love a strong female character!
