Growing up, I was largely influenced by my older brother's taste in movies and TV shows. It was he who introduced me to most of the shows I've come to love. He used to buy a lot of sitcom DVDs and I would watch all of it including the ones he placed a restriction on (either I was quite the sneaky one or he knew but ignored).
The first sitcom I watched all seasons of was F.R.I.E.N.D.S. It has a total of 10 seasons and I watched all 10, rewatching some over the years. It's an American sitcom of six friends who live in close range and have an adventurous life. What strikes me about these friends are their strong personalities, each one unique in his/her own way and all so funny. How they navigate their jobs, relationships and deal with others outside their circle was always fascinating and made me long for a strong friendship circle like theirs. Just like the show's opening theme song says, 'I'll Be There For You', we all need friends that will be there for us.
The show is as old as I can remember and one of those you wish never ends. So I really was excited about getting a reunion episode which was set to be produced last year but was halted due to COVID 19. One of the stars of the show, Matthew Perry (Chandler),however tweeted in November last year that the reunion would begin filming in March this year. I have no further information on this.
It really would be nice to get that reunion episode, I love this show so much and it's always going to be my all-time fave. It'd be nice to have all six friends together now that they're older, hopefully they still can deliver the good ol' humour from the 90's.
My Wife and Kids was another sitcom I got from my brother that I love. Comedy clearly runs in the Wayans family because the star of this show, Damon Wayans is the older sibling of the two co-stars of White Chicks, a very funny movie a lot of hivers have written about already.
Damon Wayans Sr. plays a funny dad who's both loving and strict and a wonderful terror of a father and husband to his family. His co-star wife happens to be Tisha Campbell who was the co-star wife in Martin Lawrence's, 'Martin' many years ago. I love how the parents on this show set their kids straight in very funny but teachable ways and also how they can't help but be old school. It's a great show for the family and never gets old.
Another Wayans brother I like is Marlon Wayans whose show is named after him, Marlon. It's about a divorced guy who's always at his ex-wife's house and it's no different than when he used to live there. They still have the dynamics of a married couple and their kids aren't missing out on any parenting. Marlon is a clown of course and though behaves like an overgrown kid lots of times, he's the perfect dad and would always do right by his family.
I miss this show so much and it's sad it got cancelled due to low ratings.
I remember being bored at my student industrial training in 2017 and I randomly downloaded the first episode of Insecure. From then onwards, I got hooked. This was comedy-drama, different from the regular sitcoms I know. I love funny women and Issa Rae is quite the funny one. The plot revolves around her life, being jobless, losing and gaining relationships as a 20-something year old. Most people I know who follow this show did so because of me and I love that they like it.
In a few months, the fifth season is set to air and I'm super excited. Last season I reviewed each episode I saw here on Movies and TV Shows and I hope to continue that this new season.
It's hard picking a movie off the top of my head because when it comes to comedy, I gear towards TV shows more. Coming to America is one classic comedy that would always make my list of favourite movies. Even with a very recent sequel, I'd choose the very first part of this movie over and over. I really have seen it so many times and I intend seeing it many more times.
These are a few of the comedies I like and recommend if you want to have a good laugh. What are your favourite comedy shows? You can also make an entry to the community's contest for the week.
