For someone who loves movies a lot, especially romantic movies, it really is surprising to me that I only saw The Notebook few days ago. Everyone I know who's seen it had nothing but beautiful things to say about it. It's one of those popular movies you just know is not overhyped.
I was scrolling channels and bumped into it and it was over an hour in. It wasn't difficult to figure out what the movie was about at that point and I was wondering if I had missed out on all the emotional scenes. People swear they cry really hard whenever they watch this and I was a bit too quick in judging them for that.
Soon after, I found myself in a pool of tears and wasn't spared. I saw tears welled up in his eyes but he'll deny it. I, on the other hand was sobbing like I had lost a childhood pet.
The Plot
The Notebook is like a memoir of Allie and Noah's life. It tells us how they fall in love in their younger years, get separated and are then reunited. The big surprise is we get to find out that the story in this notebook being read by an old man to a fellow nursing home resident, is actually about the both of them.
The couple grew old and Allie lost her memory. In the early stages of her dementia, she had written the stories in the notebook herself and asked Noah to read them to her whenever she forgets.
One day while listening to Noah read to her, Allie remembers Noah for a few minutes and they spend a short romantic moment until Allie forgets again. She gets frantic and is sedated which pains Noah so much so that he gets a heart attack.
They're both in the same hospital so Noah visits Allie in the dementia ward later on at night. Allie remembers Noah again and they both talk about how their love can do anything. They sleep in each other's arms and in the morning, it appears they died in their sleep.
My Rating
This is a classic movie as far as I'm concerned. It's so good that I want to read the book of which the movie was adapted from. I love Noah and Allie's kind of love, the type that stands the test of time.
I've always said I want to die in my sleep when I'm old and their peaceful death was the perfect ending for me.
I love when old people deliver their roles beautifully and the old actors did a darn good job.
This gets a 9/10 rating from me and the 1 left is because I cried and got a headache.
Watch The Notebook on Netflix.
