The main character is Fatima, a Muslimah who's quite conservative. Her dad is a practicing Muslim and her mum a christian. Her dad's brother, her uncle is an Imam and always breathing down her neck about his ideals.
Fatima had begun wearing the Hijab and she felt weird about it especially at school but her uncle thinks all she needs is a man because it's a man's job to give a woman purpose. Fatima is strongly against this view of women being predictable and she fumbles with the idea of becoming a burlesque dancer.
She goes ahead to work at the burlesque place, cleaning after the dancers and soon after, her brother catches her dancing at a burlesque show. He reports to the family and they all catch her in the burlesque act, sending her father back to the ER because of his heart condition.
Burlesque is one word I wasn't familiar with before now and I had to google it immediately I came across this movie for a better understanding. Apparently, not all burlesque performers are strippers, burlesque is an entire art on it's own which may or may not involve some provocative acts. From this movie however, it sure looked like stripping to me.
This movie seemed like it was going to be fun when I skipped through it. It's a thing I do when I don't know what to watch and most times, if I like what I see, I go ahead to watch the whole thing. This was one of such movies and boyyy was I disappointed. I should have deleted it earlier and not subject myself to the painful 1hr35mins.
Was it the annoying uncle? As a matter of fact, this uncle is soo annoying, I don't get why his opinion is so revered in the family. Yes, he's an Imam, so? He's got an opinion of everyone in his brother's family and Fatima's dad in question tolerates all his shit. This brother of his said to him, "Your wife might be the shame of the family but she makes excellent lamb". That's because she's Christian ofcourse.
And then there was her brother who ratted her out, all the while, feeling trapped himself by all the conservativeness. Talk about projecting your insecurities on others!
Lest I forget, I think the lady who played Fatima is a bad actress and the plot was shitty. How do you move from that level of conservativeness to having boobs on display in such a short time? Considering you're not one to even look people in the eye when talking. I won't lie, I fell asleep at least three times watching this for content sake. I did this for y'all.
