Family matriach Madea is back and she's on Netflix this time with A Madea Homecoming. You don't need to be up to speed with the other Madea movies to catch up with this one. I've seen all of the previous ones, I don't remember them and I had no trouble watching this because it's telling a new story and has recurrent funny characters. It's 1h 45m of Madea being herself and dealing with family drama as usual.
A Madea Homecoming stars Tyler Perry as Madea and also Uncle Joe, Tamela Mann, David Mann, Cassi Davis-Patton, Gabrielle Dennis, Brandon Black, and from the cast of Mrs Brown's Boys, Brendan O'Carroll and Jennifer Gibney.
The Plot
Madea's great-grandson graduates from college and he makes a return home with his roommate to celebrate his homecoming. Secrets are unveiled at the family gathering with Tim finding it hard to reveal his sexuality to his family and his mum having secrets of her own too to tell the family.
My Thoughts
The plot of this movie is very thin so there's not a lot I can say about it and the little twist they tried to do with the story wasn't working either. It's 90% jokes by Madea and the other old folks which to be honest, I enjoyed.
I like black family reunion movies thanks to the likes of Martin Lawrence and Tyler Perry movies. It's always jokes with bits of life lessons here and there but when does it end though? Madea was supposed to be in retirement already and this movie is not enough to make them not end the character already.
I liked it but I found this new release unnecessary. There's nothing new or different about it and I only enjoyed the Tyler Perry recurring characters like Aunt Bam, Mr Brown and Uncle Joe.
The other characters who are young people by the way, seemed like they shouldn't have been part of the movie and their acting was bleh.
A Madea Homecoming got a lot of rave online and it got to number 1 worldwide on Netflix. It turns out people talked about Madea's coachella performance that was shown as the movie credits rolled and not about the actual movie. It is basically a clickbait as that performance has nothing to do with Madea's role in the movie.
I don't think Tyler Perry should make any more Madea movies and he should send Madea into retirement for real this time. The character is tiring already and they're trying too hard at this point.
I would rate it 6/10 just for the comedy. Have you seen it yet? What do you think?
Watch A Madea Homecoming on Netflix.
