By now, I should stop judging books by their covers or rather, movies and tv shows by their covers. I heard that Kevin Hart's new show wasn't exactly comedy and I put it off because what's Kevin Hart's acting if not to make me laugh? Well, I finally saw True Story days ago and I'm mad at myself for not seeing it earlier.
Kevin Hart plays a comedian and actor, The Kid, in this Netflix crime thriller/drama and he does an impressive job alongside his co-star Wesley Snipes who plays his brother Carlton. It's suspense-filled with a finely crafted intense plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
The Plot
The Kid goes on tour and he goes to his hometown, Philadelphia for his sold-out show. There, he meets up with his older brother Carlton who encourages him to go on a night out to celebrate the show's success. He hooks up with a random girl at the club and wakes up to find her dead in his hotel room.
Feeling restless and confused, he eventually gets someone to fix the situation with the help of his brother and make it look like nothing happened in the room. He is visibly shaken by the event and can barely put up a bold front but little did he know that this was just the beginning of his problems.
He becomes involved in a series of events that leads to multiple deaths that could jeopardize his life and career making him wish he never went to that club in the first place.
My Thoughts
This show was a bit intense and I had to pause a while when I was distracted because it needed my full attention. The plot was great, could have been better, but still, I liked every bit of it.
It was obvious from the start who the villain was and one would probably have lost interest from the get-go but the actors were a compelling duo and would make you continue watching. I just needed to see how the predictable 'suspense' was going to play out and everything in between.
On one hand, it did seem like there was a lot of dilly-dallying in most of the episodes, on the other, it's what got me screaming at Kid to fucking use his brain and I like it when characters make me do that.
The theme of the show borders on deception, morality and credibility. For a crime thriller, I don't think it's dark enough, again, the story could have been better with a bit more depth. It would have been great as a 90 minute movie but I'm glad it wasn't more than 7 episodes and they were short at that.
I was impressed with Kevin Hart's acting on Fatherhood and again, I'm impressed with him doing something different from his usual comedic self in this one. I also really liked Wesley Snipes on this, he seemed to be a perfect fit for the Carlton role and a good rep for all the leeches disguised as older brothers worldwide.
Individually, both lead characters were awesome but I couldn't quite see them for the duo they were. I kept looking at it like they needed to be on two separate shows because the characters were both strong.
My favorite scene has got to be when Carlton got drunk and Kid had to support him to his room. That's the most believable drunkenness I've ever seen on tv. It was so good I wondered if he was actually drunk.
The most unnecessary part of the show is the girl Kid met at the hotel lobby or something and he had sex with her. Considering it was casual sex, the long exchange at the lobby was very unnecessary and didn't need to have so much air time.
What I liked the most was how I got a shocker in the end even with the predictable plot. It left my mouth ajar and I couldn't have asked for a better end.
I'll rate True Story a solid 8/10. You really should see this, definitely worth the watch.
Have you seen this show? What do you think?
