This South-African-produced reality show graced our screens only a few weeks ago and with all the buzz around it on Twitter, only the strong-hearted would not have seen it already. I must say, if superficial reality shows aren't your thing, this review is not for you.
I succumbed to peer pressure and eventually watched all 8 episodes of this reality series. It was all over my Twitter timeline immediately it aired for the first time on Netflix about two weeks ago and I was curious.
The show stars about 10 "young and famous" Africans and gives us a look into their lives. There are a few familiar faces in it like Annie Idibia and her husband, 2Face Idibia who are both Nigerians. There's the popular Tanzanian music artiste, Diamond Platnumz, there's Swanky J, the very extravagant Nigerian stylist, and a bunch of other people I had never seen on TV before now.
I would be lying if I said I knew the point of this show, I don't. All I kept hearing at the beginning was 'it's their time' and them taking over the world or something like that. They talked like they had been stifled from showing themselves to the rest of the world because they're Africans.
What exactly they were showing to the world, again, I don't know. Maybe I didn't hear whatever it is they said because I was too distracted by the terrible makeup and poorly-laid wigs Khanyi had on.
Khanyi
I saw a lot of vile tweets directed at Khanyi but I don't know why people were so mad at her. She was in everyone's business and gossiped a lot but what's a reality show without someone like her? I don't know what it is she does professionally, but she made it clear she went from a sugar baby to a cougar.
Her description of herself is that she makes sure she spends a man's money. She had a ball in the first episode where everyone officially met together for the first time. She clearly likes drama and is very direct, a quality I like about her.
Annie
I know Annie because she's not just Nigerian, she's the wife of the famous artiste, 2Face Idibia. She's an actor here in Nigeria and one of the reasons I decided to see this show. The show centered on her marriage and the infidelity of her husband which she's had to deal with for years and is public knowledge.
It wasn't pleasant seeing her marriage be the main talk of the show and see her so vulnerable. Annie seems like a lover of people and is an open book. This doesn't favour her on this show because she gives these people who are practically strangers that she just met too much information about her life.
Diamond
This guy is just on the show to get laid. He's got at least two babymamas and is not sure about the number of kids he has. He's the player and that's all there is to know.
Zari
She calls herself 'The Boss Lady' and doesn't shut up about it. Anyone who has to repeatedly let everyone know they're the boss isn't the boss. She's one of Diamond's babymamas and his ex.
When 2Face showed up, Annie wanted to know how Zari knew 2Face but Zari blew it out of proportion. She was disrespectful to Annie but that's what Annie gets for being too giddy around people.
Swanky J
I've always found this guy's fashion sense to be too crazy so no surprise that none of his extravagant fits appealed to me. He looked like he was on a scene of Coming To America each time with the many layers of clothing and fur.
He was the peacemaker of the show and didn't like negative vibes at all. There was a scene where he had a crazy rant which was unnecessary. It was as if the producers told him he had been too chill and needed to be crazy for a bit. Very awkward.
The others, Naked, Nadia, Kayleigh, and Andile didn't bring as much drama, not that there was major drama anyway.
I can't believe there was a premiere for this pointless show. People dressed up in dinner clothes to go see this show of nothingness like it was a big deal. They're all jobless and I obviously am too because I didn't miss any episode.
The conversations were so shallow and my husband said my IQ was quickly depleting as I continued watching. Well, thank goodness, I'm still okay, or what do you think?
Whose idea was it to bring strangers together and make them act like they've known one another for life? I wouldn't be weirded out if it was just that. It's the fact that everyone was shallow but the show had to play on Annie's marital problems and went too reality tv on her alone.
Would I be watching a second season? Well, that depends on the hype it gets and my curiosity. Have you seen this show? What are your thoughts?
