Today I want to share a K-drama that my cousin recommended to me (now a huge fan, who would have thought?). Anyway, it's good, but it has its flaws. Even so, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share my opinions about it.

Love next door (엄마친구아들)….

This romantic comedy was released in 2024, directed by Yoo Je-won and starring Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min.

What's the plot about?...

The story follows Bae Seok-ryu, our protagonist, who seems to have the perfect life in the eyes of others, after spending nine years in the United States, holding an executive position at a prestigious company, and with a wedding on the horizon. However, in an unexpected turn of events, he decides to abandon everything and return to his hometown in Korea to try to "reboot" his life from scratch.

Upon returning, he not only faces scolding and questioning from his family, but also reunites with Choi Seung-hyo, the son of his mother's best friend and a rising star architect. The two share many memories together, witnessing each other's most embarrassing moments. Although their relationship initially resumes with the typical arguments, fights, and competitive dynamics of childhood, their mutual presence becomes a refuge as they face their parents' expectations and the crises of adulthood. Will these two develop feelings for something more than friendship? What is Bae Seok-ryu hiding that led him to give up everything he had achieved so far?

Personal opinion

Now, I found this K-drama entertaining, but not one I'd watch a second time. Or perhaps it was because I expected more from the ending; I felt it lacked a conclusion. That's just my opinion; others might have found the ending better. In any case, something I liked, and which is common, is its exploration of the quarter-life crisis, where you question whether you're on the right path, whether it's wrong to start over, whether it's too late for everything, and all those valid and reasonable questions that arise in certain aspects. At that age, you're neither young nor old, and you're at a crossroads where you feel time is running out, and you're overwhelmed by the feeling that you haven't done anything memorable or significant. It's also brave, for example, in showing that it's okay to "do nothing" and that corporate success isn't synonymous with happiness, as is the case with our protagonist.

My only criticism of the script is that the pacing can feel a bit uneven around the middle; at times it relies too heavily on classic misunderstandings that could be resolved through conversation, but it compensates with very human and realistic dialogue about the pressure to be "perfect." However, the excessive melodrama can be overwhelming at times. The incredible performances manage to create empathy with the feelings and situations each character is going through. I had seen Jung So-min in other performances, and it's truly amazing how she captures every gesture and emotion in her characterization.

Positive points…

• Portrayal of Failure: It's very brave to show that a successful person can give it all up for their mental health. It normalizes feeling lost in your 30s, something many people identify with today.
• Commendable Performances
• Realistic Chemistry: The relationship between the protagonists is one of the best in the genre. It doesn't feel forced; there's a physical and verbal comfort between them that truly makes you believe they've known each other for a very, very long time.
• The Secondary Couple: Often secondary characters are just filler, but here the story between the paramedic and the journalist is refreshing, funny, and has a pace that sometimes rivals the main plot in interest.

Negative points…

• Slow Burn: If you're looking for a story where the romance explodes quickly, this isn't it.
• Melodrama Clichés: Around the middle of the series, the script introduces dramatic twists (related to secrets from the past and health issues) that feel a bit dated or "seen" in many other Korean dramas.
• Subplot Resolution: Some secondary storylines or family conflicts are resolved somewhat hastily in the final episodes, compared to the detailed development they had at the beginning.

The series teaches you that life isn't linear and that "starting over" isn't failing, but rather having the courage to pursue a life that belongs to you and not to the expectations of your parents or anyone else. It also deals with forgiveness: forgiving yourself for not being what others expected; therefore, if you like this kind of theme, then it's what you were looking for.

Hoy quiero compartirles un k-drama que me recomendó mi prima (ahora fanática de los mismo, quien diría) en fin, es bueno, pero tiene sus detalles, aun así no podía dejar pasar mis opiniones al respecto del mismo.

Esta comedia romántica fue estrenada en el año 2024, bajo la dirección de Yoo Je-won y conto con las participaciones estelares de Jung Hae-in y Jung So-min.

¿De qué va la trama?…

La historia sigue a Bae Seok-ryu, nuestra protagonista, quien pareciera tener la vida perfecta ante los ojos de los demás, luego de estar 9 años en Estados Unidos, en un puesto ejecutivo en una empresa prestigiosa y una boda en camino. Sin embargo, en un giro inesperado, decide abandonarlo todo y regresar a su barrio natal en Corea para intentar "reiniciar" su existencia desde cero.

Al volver, no solo recibe el regaño y cuestionamientos de sus familiares, también se reencuentra con Choi Seung-hyo, el hijo de la mejor amiga de su madre y un arquitecto estrella en ascenso; estos dos comparten muchos recuerdos juntos, siendo testigos de los momentos más vergonzosos de uno y el otro. Aunque al principio retoman su relación con las típicas discusiones, peleas y la dinámica competitiva de la infancia, la presencia mutua se vuelve un refugio mientras enfrentan las expectativas de sus padres y las crisis de la edad adulta. ¿Tendrá estos dos un sentimiento mucho más de la amistad? ¿Qué esconde Bae Seok-ryu para que haya renunciado a todo por lo que había conseguido hasta ahora?

Opinión personal

Ahora bien, este k-drama me resultó entretenida, más no para ver por segunda vez, o quizás fue porque esperaba más al final, siento que no hubo conclusión, es mi opinión, para otros puede que le resulté mejor el cómo finalizó. De cualquier modo, algo que me gustó y que suele pasar, es el abordar esa crisis de los 30, en donde te preguntas si tomates el camino correcto, si está mal comenzar de 0, que si es tarde para todo y todos esos cuestionamientos que son válidos y muy razonables en cierto aspectos, debido a que, es esa edad es que no eres joven pero tampoco viejo y estas en una encrucijada donde sientes que el tiempo se acorta más y más y te embarga el sentir de que no haz echo nada memorable o de gran peso; también, por ejemplo, es valiente al mostrar que está bien "no hacer nada" y que el éxito corporativo no es sinónimo de felicidad, como sucede con nuestra protagonista.

Lo que le criticaría al guion, es que el ritmo puede sentirse un poco irregular hacia la mitad; a veces se apoya demasiado en malentendidos clásicos que podrían resolverse hablando, pero lo compensa con diálogos muy humanos y realistas sobre la presión de ser "perfecto"; aunque puede que, el melodrama excesivo llegue abrumar. Las actuaciones increíbles, logran empatizar con el sentir y la situación por el que atraviesa cada uno de sus personajes, bueno, ya había visto otras interpretaciones de Jung So-min y la verdad es asombrosa como logra cada gesto y sentimiento de su caracterización.

Puntos positivos…

• Representación del Fracaso: Es muy valiente al mostrar que una persona exitosa puede dejarlo todo por salud mental. Normaliza el hecho de estar perdido a los 30 años, algo con lo que mucha gente se identifica hoy en día.
• Actuaciones aplaudibles.
• Química Realista: La relación entre los protagonistas es de las mejores del género. No se siente forzada; hay una comodidad física y verbal entre ellos que realmente te hace creer que se conocen desde hace mucho, pero mucho tiempo.
• La Pareja Secundaria: Muchas veces los personajes secundarios son relleno, pero aquí la historia entre la paramédica y el periodista es refrescante, divertida y tiene un ritmo que a veces compite en interés con la principal.

Puntos negativos…

• Ritmo Lento (Slow Burn): Si buscas una historia donde el romance explote rápido, esta no es.
• Clichés de Melodrama: Hacia la mitad de la serie, el guion introduce giros dramáticos (relacionados con secretos del pasado y temas de salud) que se sienten un poco anticuados o "vistos" en muchos otros dramas coreanos.
• Cierre de Subtramas: Algunos hilos secundarios o conflictos familiares se resuelven de manera un poco apresurada en los capítulos finales, en comparación con el desarrollo tan detallado que tuvieron al inicio.

La serie te enseña que, la vida no es lineal y que el “reiniciar” no es fracasar, sino tener el coraje de buscar una vida que te pertenezca a ti y no a las expectativas de tus padres o de cualquier otra persona. También habla sobre el perdón: perdonarse a uno mismo por no ser lo que los demás esperaban; por ello, si te gusta este tipo de temática, pues es lo que estabas buscando.
