Personal opinion
This movie made me cry buckets and it still does. It really touches you, and beyond the theme of death, it teaches us about life and the impact we can have on others. Augustus is obsessed with having a heroic death or doing something "great" to be remembered by the whole world. Hazel, on the other hand, teaches him that being important to just one person is enough. The film pushes us to value our inner circles and to understand that we don't need the validation of the masses for our lives to have meaning, and I think that's an important point for understanding the dynamics of living. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well, because we often believe that we are nothing unless a significant and large group values us as such.
One point I also liked, regarding the theme and message of this story, is that we can't avoid being hurt, but we do have the freedom to choose who hurts us and what we do with that scar. This occurs at a time when the protagonist doesn't want to connect with more people because she feels like a grenade, something ephemeral, and she's afraid of hurting others by leaving. But the film shows us that this is a normal feeling, since living hurts; there is no life without loss, disappointment, or physical/emotional pain. Trying to avoid pain is, in essence, avoiding living. With this in mind, I leave you with these two questions:
• Does a scar make us bitter and withdrawn?
• Or does a scar become a reminder that we were brave enough to take the risk?
Now, continuing with the technical details of the film, I must add that the performances of Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort were memorable. I have no complaints whatsoever; each one conveys the feelings and experiences of their characters. Shailene doesn't play a "victim," but rather a weary person, and Ansel is charming in such a pretentious character as Gus. Each gave incredible performances. The setting uses an evolving color palette. In Indianapolis, the tones are more neutral and domestic, reflecting routine and limitations. In contrast, Amsterdam is portrayed with a romantic, bluish-gold light that elevates the story to something almost mythological.
Positive points…
- More realistic characters: They are sarcastic and judgmental of others, unlike in other stories where they are idealized as saints.
- The use of dark humor: The plot uses humor as a legitimate defense mechanism. Jokes about their own physical conditions relieve tension and prevent the film from becoming unbearably melodramatic.

- Intellectual chemistry: It's not just physical attraction; the plot is built on the exchange of ideas, books, and philosophies of life. This elevates the romance to something deeper than simply "liking each other."
Negative points…
- I feel like some characters were a bit over the top, even though they have an important role in the plot. Hmm, I don't know, they just seemed like one of the crowd.
- Structural predictability: If you're an experienced viewer of romantic dramas, you can anticipate the plot twists well in advance.

This film, and the story in general, for me, breaks with that happy-ending approach and that lack of fear of cynicism; often, films about young people with cancer try to sanctify the sick. Here, Hazel and Gus can be rude, sarcastic, and make mistakes. The film is a critique of the idea that a life only has value if it is long or if it becomes a "legend." The plot development leads us by the hand along a path where victory is not being cured, but having loved consciously.

Fue estrenada para el año 2014, bajo la dirección de Josh Boone y basada en la novela homónima de John Green; esta historia de drama y romance adolescente, fue protagonizada por Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Laura Dern, entre otros.
¿De qué va la trama?…
La historia narra la vida de Hazel Grace Lancaster, una joven adolescente inteligente, pero algo cínica, y no es para más, ya que vive pegada a un tanque de oxígeno debido a un cáncer de pulmón que tiene, lo que hace que su vida sea una cuenta regresiva o así lo ve ella. Todo cambia, cuando en su grupo de apoyo conoce a Augustus Waters un joven bastante carismático que le atrae a Hazel desde el momento en el que la vio, este chico ha superado su cáncer óseo y quiere ser reconocido por todos antes de morir, su visión del mundo es metafórico, que de igual modo también termina cautivando a nuestra protagonista.

Opinión personal
Esta película me hizo llorar a mares y aún lo sigue haciendo, realmente toca algo en uno y más allá del tema de la muerte, es enseñarnos el vivir y el impacto que podemos llegar a tener en otros; Augustus vive obsesionado con tener una muerte heroica o hacer algo "grande" para ser recordado por el mundo entero. Hazel, en cambio, le enseña que ser importante para una sola persona es suficiente. La película nos empuja a valorar los círculos íntimos y a entender que no necesitamos la validación de las masas para que nuestra vida tenga sentido y creo que es un punto importante para entender la dinámica del vivir, no sé si me explico, ya que, creemos que no somos nada al menos que un grupo bastante significativo y grande, lo valore como tal.
Un punto que también me gustó, en referencia al tema y mensaje que deja esta historia es que, no podemos evitar ser heridos, pero sí tenemos la libertad de elegir quién nos hiere y qué hacemos con esa cicatriz y esto ocurre en un momento donde la protagonista no quiere relacionarse con más personas, debido a que, se siente como una granada, como algo efímero y tiene miedo a lastimar a otros por su partida, pero la película nos demuestra que es un sentimiento normal, ya que vivir duele, no existe una vida sin pérdida, decepción o dolor físico/emocional, pues intentar evitar el dolor es, en esencia, evitar vivir. En esta oportunidad y a partir de esto, les dejo estas dos interrogantes:
• ¿La cicatriz nos vuelve personas amargadas y cerradas?
• ¿O la cicatriz se convierte en un recordatorio de que fuimos lo suficientemente valientes para arriesgarnos?
Ahora, continuando con los detalles técnicos de la película, debo acotar que las actuaciones de Shailene Woodley y Ansel Elgort, fueron memorables, no tengo queja alguna, cada uno nos entrega el sentimiento y lo que se encuentran atravesando sus personajes, Shailene no interpreta a una "víctima", sino a una persona cansada y Ansel, resulta encantador para un personaje tan pretensioso como lo es Gus; cada uno nos dio increíbles interpretaciones. El escenario usa una paleta de colores que evoluciona, En Indianápolis, los tonos son más neutros y domésticos, reflejando la rutina y la limitación. En cambio, Ámsterdam es retratada con una luz romántica, azulada y dorada, que eleva la historia a algo casi mitológico.
Puntos positivos…
