Have you ever wondered what the most successful soap opera in the world is?
This question is too easy to answer. Back in the late 90s, Colombia, specifically the RCN Channel, presented what would mark a new era in television. For a long time, we'd been taught that aesthetics and perfection should be part of a good film and television production, showing us a somewhat distorted view of reality, portraying beautiful people as good and "ugly" people as bad.

This telenovela, written by Fernando Gaitán, along with Liliana Hernández, and directed by Mario Ribero, tells the story of Beatriz "Betty" Pinzón Solano, a woman who, not being considered beautiful, dedicated her life to studying, thus gaining the necessary merits to forge a future through her own efforts. From the beginning of the telenovela, it was shown that this was not enough, since wherever she went, a beautiful woman replaced her, or she was simply discarded because of it.
Esta telenovela escrita por Fernando Gaitán, junto a Liliana Hernández, y dirigida por Mario Ribero, cuenta la historia de Beatriz "Betty" Pinzón Solano, una mujer que al no ser agraciada dedicó su vida a estudiar, y así tener los méritos necesarios para forjar un futuro desde su esfuerzo, y desde el inicio de la telenovela mostraron que esto no era suficiente, ya que, donde quiera que llegaba, una bonita la reemplazaba, o simplemente era descartada por esto.
Then, Betty arrived at the fashion company "ECOMODA," and although she was rejected at the first interview, her future boss argued that he needed someone qualified for the position, and she got the job based on her merits. From here, a new chapter in her life began. Full of excitement, she introduced herself, and since her boss (quite the ladies' man) was already committed, he decided to hire her for her looks, so as not to be distracted and to fully fulfill his commitment to the company. And so we see such a remarkable story that impacted the entire world.

Actor Jorge Enrique Abello recently stated that the telenovela "Betty" wasn't originally planned as it is today. It was created without any vision and solely to fill a gap in the broadcast schedule. Initially, only 30 episodes were planned to fill airtime, but it only took a week for it to become a massive ratings hit, leading the writers to extend the episodes and the storyline, which didn't follow the same plot we know now. "Betty" became so popular that it was even watched more than the World Cup, earning a Guinness World Record for the first on-screen kiss between the character and her co-star.

Betty ha sido tan famosa que en su tiempo fue más vista que hasta el mismo mundial de futbol, llevándose un Record Guinnes, por el primer beso en pantalla del personaje con su otro protagonista.
After its initial success and finale, there was considerable public pressure to bring the novel back to the screen, and it did, but without the same results. With some of the original cast members absent, this series was indeed very short, with only a few episodes. Although it maintained the same feel as the original, it was ultimately removed from the canon and is considered one of the worst television sequels.
Tras todo su éxito y final, hubo mucha presión de parte del público en que la novela volviera de nuevo a la pantalla, y se hizo, pero sin el mismo resultado. Con la ausencia de algunos del elenco, esta serie si fue realmente corta, con pocos episodios, a pesar de que esta mantenía la misma vibra que la anterior, esta fue deshecha del canon de la historia y considerada de las peores continuaciones de una historia televisiva.
If you want to know the impact this novel had, it was adapted into more than 25 different versions in various countries, and the original version was dubbed into more than 20 different languages. I think that's the least relevant aspect, though it doesn't diminish its amazingness. In fact, there's even an animated version called Betty Toons, which takes place in a school, and although it doesn't make sense, everyone there is a child. Elizabeth Olsen also mentioned that she was a huge fan of the original novel, so much so that she and some friends tried to translate it, and she and her friends even created a musical based on it for an English class project.

"Yo Soy Betty, La Fea" is considered the most successful Latin American production, consistently ranking in the top 10 on all platforms that have acquired the rights, such as Netflix and Amazon, making it the most profitable telenovela. So much so, that there's a hugely popular meme that says, "Betty la fea has saved many companies: Ecomoda, RCN, Netflix, and Amazon," based on the fact that the telenovela's plot revolves around saving Ecomoda from bankruptcy.
Yo Soy Betty, La Fea, es considerada la producción más exitosa de Latinoamérica, estando sin detenerse en los tops 10 de todas las plataformas que han tenido sus derechos, como Netflix y Amazon, siendo la telenovela más rentable. Tanto así, que existe un meme superpopular que dice, "Betty la fea ha salvado muchas empresas: Ecomoda, RCN, Netflix y Amazon", con base en que de eso va la trama de la novela en sí, de salvar de la bancarrota a la Ecomoda.
Amazon didn't rest on its laurels, and opted to return to the original story with a plot set 20 years after the events of the first installment, but completely ignoring the story told in its sequel "ECOMODA", bringing a new success to the platform.
