All of the David Fincher movies are amazing, they leave a truly lasting impression, and Se7en is one of the best examples. It is a psychological thriller which is both frightening and suspenseful, and it unravels the darkest corners of human depravity. With a captivating plot, an creepy atmosphere, and amazing performances from Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, Se7en is one of the most engaging crime thrillers ever to hit the screen. And as you know from my previous posts, I am a huge Brad Pitt's fan, so I really liked this movie.
Plot
Their protagonists are William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and rookie David Mills (Brad Pitt). In it, they hunt a serial murderer who bases his modus operandi on the seven deadly sins. Each crime scene sees the investigation getting progressively more repulsive, taking them deeper into a game that's always seemingly being played one step ahead of them by a killer. The deliberate, step-by-step unraveling of the secret keeps you hanging on the tenterhooks to the final scenes, one of the most sensational climaxes ever in movie history.
Cast
The two actors are excellent foils to each other and one of the best things in the film is the contrast between Morgan Freeman as the serene and wise Somerset who has seen everything in decades, and Brad Pitt as the temperamental and excitable Mills with a lot of zeal to demonstrate. Their opposite personalities make for a compelling dynamic, and their journey also becomes more intriguing. Kevin Spacey's short but unforgettable role as John Doe, the mysterious serial killer, is nothing short of memorable. His calculated, unsettling presence makes him one of the most unnerving villains in film history.
Cinematics
David Fincher's signature style runs through Se7en. The grimy, rain-soaked cityscape of the movie is desperate and suffocating, much like the bleak narrative. The cinematography is creepy, with very low light and darkened shots that contribute to the film's creepy mood. Every shot is brings the audience into a place where evil lurks on every corner, so the tension reaches a crisis at times.
In addition to its ghastly killings and psychological horror, Se7en is a film that addresses deep philosophical concerns. It causes you to wonder about morality, justice, and the wickedness in humans. The film doesn't just scare you—it remains in your mind long after the film has concluded.
Brad Pitt
Brad Pitt gives one of his most intense performances in Se7en. As Detective Mills, he does a great job showing anger, frustration, and deep sadness as his character reaches his limit. His energy and emotions make the film feel more real, making the ending even more powerful. And I swear to god, the "What's in the box" phrase still sends shivers down my spine.
Conclusion
Se7en isn't just a thriller-crime film, it's a crazy ride that keeps you in thrall from beginning to end. With its grimy setting, outstanding performances, and one of the greatest endings ever put on film (In my opinion, this has one of, if not the best, endings in the history of cinema). it's one of the all-time greatest psychological thrillers ever made. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favour and see it. Just be warned, this is a film that you won't soon forget.
