BAH HUMBUG!
In an audacious display of "bah humbug" Ethan Van Sciver and Comicsgate took to YouTube to complain about a Christmas card produced by Eric July's Rippaverse and Iconic Comics. Iconic Comics is well known for a group of popular graphic novels - Black Hops and Kamen America from Tim Lim and Mark Pellegrini, and Soul Finder from Douglas Ernst. Eric July - has wide range of superhero graphic novels Isom, Alphacore, Yaira, and recently the Horseman created by Chuck Dixon. The Iconic Comics and Rippaverse teams have long been friendly with each other as publishers in the indie comic book space and created a Christmas Card to surprise and entertain their fans.
Ethan Van Sciver has conducted a long feud again Eric July with 100s of hours on his "Trashcast" program on YouTube devoted to obsessing over July and the Rippaverse. Comicsgate's Shane Davis joined Van Sciver in the protracted rant against the Christmas Card.
PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TO MEN?
Van Sciver has nurtured an observably unhinged hatred for the Iconic Comics team for more than a half a decade, in October of this year Ethan opined on Twitter - ** "Tim Lim and those Iconic folks were poisonous little bitches."**
Rational readers may be asking "we are talking about comic books, right? Silly characters, superheroes, entertainment?". This is an astute observation. Van Sciver's business model is centered on entertaining irascible and incontinent viewers on YouTube who enjoy pedestrian humor, and comic books are an afterthought.
Van Sciver and his fan's also failed to notice the historical reference in the Christmas card. On Twitter, Iconic's Doulas Ernst observed that the card was itself an homage to a famous illustration depicting the Christmas Truce of 1914. Angry reactionary sentiments about comic books apparently corresponds neither to Christmas cheer or historical literacy. Christmas is certainly an excellent time to reflect on gratitude, and joy - and we certainly hope that the angry find peace this season.
