I love that you mention those tokens! It's a mess. However, it's freedom as well. Any token has it's own ecosystem. I first loved #palnet for taking the lead and still do, whilst never ever applying anything with it. From my perspective its motivation has been to add to the possibilities of just hanging around with the whales.

While with !BEER it is a completely different concept. There's no exclusive front-end but the intention to maybe some day having a demand that makes one coin worth a real beer. And regardless of whether this is going to be achieved it's fun to play with it.

Another one I love is !invest_vote And this is not even a token - so basically we are talking bots here. It's a Steem community that enables plankton to add up a reward to $ 0.02 for reaching payout, especially with comments. So we see another creative approach to level the field without asking for permission.

And now we even have Hive. So yes, it's a mess. But it's fun to explore. And it grows organically and not like a planned economy. That's what I love the most!
