Hive is a multifaceted blockchain with a variety of communities each with its own appeal to the interests of diverse members. In this complex environment it is difficult to navigate the sea of possibilities alone or without some guidance. In this post I'd like to share what I learned this week from a little experiment done with delegating hive power to two accounts namely and
.
However before I share my experience I thought you might be interested in a useful resource for finding data/information on your account. It's called Hivestats and it can be found at this link https://hivestats.io/
The Power of Hivestats
Hivestats provides some useful statistics for tracking and analysing my account by simply clicking on the link https://hivestats.io/ and typing my user name.

While browsing through the data on Hivestats I noted that the APY (Annual Percentage Yield) for delegating hive power to the leo.voter account was quoted as 16%.

I also couldn't help but notice that the APR(Annual Percentage Rate) quoted by some other projects like LOLz and tipu was around 10%. On the other hand, when I curate on my own by voting on posts all over the blockchain, the percentage return is significantly less.
I was a bit confused not knowing the difference between the two (APY and APR) so I decided to do a little experiment by delegating 100HP to leo.voter.
The Power of delegating to
As promised, the payouts started the very next day in Leo tokens .255 tokens to be exact. So by my calculations if this continues for a year assuming the same payout daily that would be .255×365=93 Leo tokens.

Assuming that each Leo token has a value of.07308 means 93x.07308=6.8 Hive annually for delegating 100HP.
The Power of delagting to
For comparison I also decided to check out an alternate option by delegating 100HP to which promises a 10% APR, to see if there was a significant difference. Like Leo.voter, the payouts started after 24 hours. However the payout came in hive form i.e .019 Hive. So assuming the same daily payout for a year would mean .019x365=6.9 Hive. This is about the same as the Leo payout when converted to hive.
So even although an APY(Annual Percentage Yield) of 16% looks appealing, in the end all things being equal, the return when compared to the 10% APR (Annual Percentage Rate) is not significantly different.

Untilized Power?
Are you a hiver who has excess HP and are you often inactive ? Is your voting power consistently at 100% and often unused? You may want to consider the option of delegating some of your Hive Power to accounts like or
. In making your decision you will probably think about whether you prefer your payouts in hive or other tokens bearing in mind that the prices of tokens go up and down from time to time. Of course you will also want to keep some of your hive power for manually curating the posts that you deem worthy of your vote.
The Power to Produce Content: (Side note to self)
Producing content is a great way to earn on hive. Posts are more likely to get noticed if we build a reputation of consistently producing high quality posts of between 250 to 500 words, use clear pictures, site sources, post interesting content and engage with fellow hivers.
