The Increasing Need For Decentralization
The greatest tool against war is information and right now we are seeing a clear lack of information be shared to China and Russia as this war continues to rage on. While all forms of media are in some way propaganda I do expect that most people if given all information unfiltered that they would be smart enough to come to their own conclusions and the entire world would be in a much better place.
The most wild thing is politics and I believe for the most part the crypto community hates it. The politics comes greed, power and deception. Even here in the USA there is a level of it but at least other information can be shared and if people want to can do their own research and base their own decisions.
However that continues to come under threat recently every day which is extremely disappointing. We have see countless back and forth on this with social media as of late.
What Would A Decentralized Social Media Site Look Like?
For a truly decentralized social media site it would mean anything could get posted and go. There's kind of big issues with that though and we see it all the time with new start ups and they have to take some type of action to control it.
There's been countless times in the past where a social media site attempts to be decentralized and what happens? It's taken over by the worst in human nature. Porn, violence, threats, spam among other things.
It would also mean the hosting and the domain register would be to be untouchable as well. No central server instead it would be something like a peer to peer network where each computer contributes to the access of the site a large CDN network.
Would It Work?
Personally I feel a fully decentralized network such as this would never work. It's been tried and one of the first things to happen is spam on a level that just trashes the site so no one cares to use it.
This is why a decentralized system would also need some type of governance by it's users. Now that, that right there does hold possibility. So when there are bad actors it now comes down to a group collective to make those decisions.
In a way we do have some platforms in place that are offering this at least on some level. Platforms like this one right here Hive and LeoFinance offer somewhat of a decentralized social media. It mainly comes down to those to down vote content at the moment if they feel it doesn't belong. In a way this is somewhat of a community governance.
We are seeing the dawn on these platforms but there's still much further we could go with them. Like with anything it takes time but what's important is we are making strives to get there.
