This Information I believe will be extremely important for you to know and understand. If you're too busy to learn Media Literacy, learn Digital Literacy. If you're too busy to learn Digital Literacy, learn News Literacy. You shouldn't be using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Google, etc., without a substantial knowledge of how they think.
The media is so powerful that it impacts all aspects of our lives: how we live, how we love, and even how we die. So, you're doing yourself a great disservice by not understanding how the media works. A great percentage of what you believe right now is a result of the media you're exposed to. The types of posts you see on your Facebook timeline are a result of the media you're exposed to.
The media is so powerful that Marshall McLuhan, one of the prominent media theorists of the 20th century, opined that it can make the innocent guilty and the guilty innocent. Again, if you're too busy to learn Media Literacy, learn Digital Literacy. If you're too busy to learn Digital Literacy, learn News Literacy. In this time and age, fake news continuously permeates our news feeds. You cannot rely on the media to think for you.
You shouldn't be thinking like this:
- I saw it on television, so it's true.
- That person who posted it has 1 million followers, so it's true.
- That newspaper published it, so it's true.
- This person always posts confirmed news, so this one he posted is true.
- The person says he saw it himself, so it's true.
- He screenshot the chat and posted it. I saw his name and picture, so it's true.
- His account is verified on Facebook, so it's true.
- I had his voice in the audio, so it's true.
Every media content is cloaked with an agenda by the maker of such media message. You must be able to evaluate, analyze, and make meaning out of media content.
