For the little time that I have been running around this cryptospace, I have as well involve myself in few crypto airdrop participations, and that has actually lead me to making this very publication as I have witness some ups and downs hunting for airdrops trying to see which one pays out as somehow we all kind of hear people getting lucky with airdrops that actually paid off.
My very first steps of hunting for airdrops were kind of rough as I was using my official wallet connecting to different airdropping websites, trying to see which one will pay off which actually landed my wallet to being open to danger as i hadn't a clue about having a separate wallet for such adventures. I learnt that very late but lucky enough I didn't get to lose anything before learning how best to go with airdrop hunting using a separate wallet.
What are Crypto Airdrops?
An airdrop is an unsolicited distribution of a cryptocurrency token or coin, usually for free, to numerous wallet addresses. Airdrops are often associated with the launch of a new cryptocurrency or a DeFi protocol, primarily as a way of gaining attention and new followers, resulting in a larger user base and a wider disbursement of coins. (Wikipedia)
Basically airdrops are cryptocurrency tokens that are being distributed to individuals for free in exchange of a little task in order to promote the projects such as involving individuals to promote the website and do few tasks including referring more people to the project and in exchange they get the tokens for free. There is also a project called the "pre-sale" where individuals get to accumulate crypto currency tokens for a lower price before the official launch. (I will make a detailed information about this "Pre-sale" on another publication)
Dangers Of Airdrop Hunting
One of the dangers individual face involving in airdrop hunting includes getting their funds extorted from them through the process of connecting their wallets to the websites that claim to have been giving out free coins/tokens. It is important to note that in this airdrop hunt, people create multiple scam websites even cloning original projects to have been the owners with the aim of extorting from your wallet. That is why it is very advisable that you use a separate wallet while participating on crypto airdrops so you don't get to face the dangers coming from that side of the gig.
Another danger to look out for is the clickable links being sent to you that aim for different scam missions. This doesn't just have to do with connecting to your wallet for an extortion but at the other end it can give them an access to your device to extort more personal and private informations from your device. That is why I solutely advised that when an Airdrop link is being send to you, you might as well want to do your research about the project. Also there are few websites that allows you figure out scam links from original links, so always make sure to do your research and visit the official website just to be sure they are the ones distributing such opportunities just so you stay on a safer side of the hustle.
