I’m not sure where this post will end up, but I feel like I need to get these thoughts out. Maybe it’ll help someone else who’s in a similar situation, or maybe it’ll just help me clear my head. Either way, here we go.
Over the last few months, I’ve been working on an idea — something I genuinely believe could work here in New Zealand. I’ve mapped out what I want to build and what needs to happen to get there. The problem is… I’m unskilled in almost every area required to make it real. And to make things even harder, I’ve been unemployed for about three years.
Still, I took the first step. I found someone local whose job is to help people start businesses. That part was surprisingly easy — and free. But that’s where the challenges really began.
The Hard Parts Hit Fast
- I don’t have the money to pay for their course or mentorship.
- I don’t have the skills to build, run, or manage a website.
- I live in a small town, so finding local help is extremely limited.
- And of course, it’s nearly Christmas, so most people are winding down for the year.
Since that first meeting, I’ve applied to one NZ organisation that supports startups, but they turned me down. That one stung a bit.
I also emailed four different web developers in my area — two said they couldn’t help, and one said they didn’t want to be involved in my project at all.
To top it off, someone pointed me toward another website that’s similar to what I want to build. That forced me back to the drawing board to figure out what makes my idea different, and how I can do it better.
Where I’m At Now
Right now, I’m letting the idea sit until after Christmas and the New Year. I want to take some time to think about what will make my website stand out, what I can do differently, and how I can come back in the new year ready to push forward again.
This whole experience has been eye‑opening. It’s been frustrating at times, but I’m determined to make this work — not just for me, but so I can provide for my family.
If you’ve read this far, thank you. Any positive vibes are appreciated. Wishing you a good Christmas and sending all my prayers for a happy New Year.
