Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to chat a little bit about the negative implications of injured economies that many don't think of when it comes to entertainment!
Recessions Hurt Hobbying
We've all got them, or at least I would hope so. Hobbies! Hobbies are a crucial element to our human psyche in my opinion, they give us opportunities to do things that are not necessarily our "jobs" (although they certainly can be something that produces some type of financial gain, I'm looking at you Hive! :D) but they provide such a key element to unwinding and removing stress from our lives.
What is sadly one of the many things that get cut back on when economic times get tough? Hobbies! It's quite sad indeed, because we desperately need more hobbies, not less. As well by hobbies I'm not referring to sitting back on your ass on the couch and watching some type of television or streaming shit. That's not a hobby and I will fight that bullshit tooth and nail let me tell you. A hobby is something where you are actually doing something!
The little man and I were out for a walk the other day and we went to a park that I visited once before earlier this summer. I happened to walk by this area myself and was curious what it was for, but then I found a plaque somewhere that said it was for people who had hobby remote control planes and various other vehicles. The community this is located in is a bit on the affluent side, because you don't see these giant spaces in the ghetto, let me tell you hahaha. Sad but true.
I was curious about the place because obviously at one point, they had quite a following and community of people using this type of thing so they dedicated an entire section of a fucking park to the people. That's pretty cool! I love when a bunch of people get together and do hobbying shit, because that's what is so important about doing hobby stuff: it can also provide quite a bit of social connectivity! I didn't think that I would ever see someone using the field the way it was intended, because as the theme of the post and the title goes, being in an economic downturn is a bitch for people with hobbies. We tend to decrease or eliminate them when things start hitting the fan, or in this case the airplane propeller!
I was happy to see the dude, because I also love these types of things. Nearly anything remote controlled is cool as shit and something I would love to do one day! Sadly I don't have the funds for that type of stuff lol going back to the recession line. Yeah I could definitely buy this thing and spend hours putting it together, setting it all up and figuring it out. With the greater economic bullshit going on though, I figure "do we really need to spend money on this here?" and then the realization is that no, it would be better served being saved in the bank (with what little use that is, how pathetic the savings rates are these days.. a whole different topic!) or spent on something a little more practical for our everyday use such as some fishing gear that we will get a lot more use out of.
With economic stuff, there are always so many factors that go into decisions like this but for sure one of the primary ones is how difficult things are from a mindset perspective. I guess they are certainly winning the mental game and is more than likely the goal. The "they" here is a very loose group, because it's obviously hard to figure out who the string pullers are but the talking heads and mouth pieces on the televisions and newspaper headlines are nearly all singing the same tune, so that is at least something. The mindset is very dark and dreary but I think that it's absolutely something to be taken with a grain of salt.
Would I have looked into purchasing a hobby plane back in the previous 6 years if we had the money we have now? For sure! We don't have a lot of money but we do have a small cushion to help us out if something went sideways. It wouldn't last for an incredibly long time but the outlook 6 years ago was more positive than it is now and that makes a pretty big difference when it comes to these types of things.
What I'm wondering is will there be a noticeable transition from bad to good in some of the economic things? Will we see the shift as it happens or will we largely wake up in a few years and look back and see that things did improve but we weren't paying enough attention to it to notice? Hard to say for sure but one of the difficult things is the impact it has on the hobby element of life. This dude here is basking in the glory of it and I hope that he is able to do that for many more years to come!
