Muchas festividades son tomadas solo como una oportunidad de descanso y vacaciones. Es lógico, para eso están los días libres, para descansar de nuestras tareas y volver renovados o pasar tiempo con la familia o seres queridos.
Pero hoy es primero de mayo, y quizás más que nunca es necesario hablar de que se conmemora en esta fecha. Muchas cosas hoy cotidianas son en realidad el producto de la lucha de las generaciones anteriores. Como el tope de 8hs diarias que es una ley que rige a nivel global, producto de la masacre de Hayworth en Chicago. Los mártires de Chicago vivirán por siempre en la memoria colectiva y en los libros de historia.
Vivimos tiempos extraños, donde incluso en ocasiones algo estrafalarias algunos individuos dicen que no debería existir un límite a las horas que un trabajador contrate a un empleado. Alegando que es una libre negociación entre partes, como si no existiera una asimetría de poder en quien puede prescindir del empleado pero éste no puede prescindir de comer, necesita su salario.
El sistema en el que vivimos está lleno de fallas e injusticias, pero también es cierto que está concebido con los ideales correctos. Si bien la competitividad tiene ciertas cualidades, llevadas al extremo se transforma en un sistema insalubre. Tenemos que poner el sistema y la economía en función de las personas, no de las corporaciones. Porque las corporaciones no crean la riqueza, la riqueza la crean todos, caso contrario ya con la AI el trabajo como lo conocemos habría terminado. La realidad es que el trabajador es una pieza indispensable del aparato productivo y de la generación de riquezas.
Pero el trabajador tiene una desventaja compleja. Son muchos y divididos no pueden ejercer la presión para hacer pesar el valor de su predominio en la cadena productiva. Las empresas y corporaciones al ser centralizadas pueden proyectar todos esfuerzos de manera simple. El trabajador para hacer valer sus derechos y reclamar por nuevos debe organizarse para concentrar su influencia, para eso inventó los sindicatos. Instituciones que tristemente con el pasar de los años se fueron corrompiendo a niveles lamentables. Los sindicalistas manejan los mismos autos que los patrones y arreglan con empresarios y el poder de turno. Quizás hacen alguna huelga en algún momento que al empresariado le es cómodo y así satisface a las bases y mantiene una legitimidad que no es tal.
Los sindicatos son demonizados por la opinión pública (o publicada) y hoy día se cree que los trabajadores haciendo paro son la razón por la cuál el sistema no es justo. Que los sindicalistas sean traidores sin un ápice de vergüenza claramente no ayuda en lo más mínimo. Que la distribución de la riqueza sea cada vez más despareja parece no importarle a nadie. Solo disfrutamos de la jornada libre mientras día a día nuestro dinero cada vez vale menos y las fortunas de unos pícaros cada día se hace más grande.
¡Feliz día del trabajador! No le agradezcas a los Mártires de Chicago, pero al menos sé consciente que a ellos les debes tu descanso.
Many festivities are taken only as an opportunity to rest and vacation. It is logical, that is what free days are for, to rest from our tasks and return renewed or spend time with family or loved ones.
But today is May 1st, and perhaps more than ever it is necessary to talk about what is commemorated on this date. Many everyday things today are actually the product of the struggle of previous generations. The martyrs of Chicago will live forever in the collective memory and in the history books.
We live in strange times, where even on somewhat bizarre occasions some individuals say that there should be no limit to the hours a worker hires an employee. Alleging that it is a free negotiation between parties, as if there were no asymmetry of power in who can do without the employee but he cannot do without eating, he needs his salary.
The system we live in is full of flaws and injustices, but it is also true that it is designed with the right ideals. Although competitiveness has certain qualities, taken to the extreme it becomes an unhealthy system. We have to put the system and the economy based on people, not corporations. Because corporations do not create wealth, wealth is created by everyone, otherwise with AI, work as we know it would have ended. The reality is that the worker is an indispensable part of the productive apparatus and the generation of wealth.
But the worker has a complex disadvantage. They are many and divided, they cannot exert pressure to weigh the value of their predominance in the productive chain. Companies and corporations, being centralized, can project all efforts in a simple way. To assert his rights and demand new ones, the worker must organize to concentrate his influence, for that he invented unions. Institutions that sadly, over the years, became corrupted to regrettable levels. The union members drive the same cars as the bosses and make arrangements with businessmen and the power in power. Perhaps they go on strike at a time when it is comfortable for the business community and thus satisfies the bases and maintains a legitimacy that is not such.
Unions are demonized by public (or published) opinion and today it is believed that workers going on strike are the reason why the system is not fair. That unionists are traitors without an ounce of shame clearly does not help in the least. That the distribution of wealth is increasingly uneven does not seem to matter to anyone. We only enjoy the free day while day by day our money becomes worth less and less and the fortunes of some rogues grow bigger every day.
Happy worker's day! Don't thank the Chicago Martyrs, but at least know that you owe them your rest.
