Nach seinem Physikstudium in Cambridge (GB) und weiteren Stationen erhielt er 1956 eine Astronomie-Professur an der Harvard University (USA). Zugleich wurde er Berater der NASA. Von 1959 bis 1981 war er Chef der Astronomie-Abteilung der Cornell University (USA). Gold veröffentlichte zahlreiche Abhandlungen zur Astronomie, Geophysik und Physik der Planetenräume. Von ihm stammt die erste Erklärung der Pulsare als rotierende Neutronen-Sterne. Nach seinem Ruhestand 1985 forschte Thomas Gold vor allem zur Entstehung von Erdgas und Erdöl.
