Music is an integral part of every culture, and personal tastes are hugely different. For me, gospel music has been a constant wellspring of inspiration and gladness for quite a long time now. Let me share how gospel music was such a big part of my more youthful years, what attracted me to this genre, and how it keeps on uplifting my soul every day, even in my current season of life.
Growing up with Gospel Music
I have loved gospel music since I was a child. As a youth, I was the lead singer in my church choir. Leading the choir and composing worship songs was part of my life back then. Singers like Ron Kenoly and Don Moen were major inspirations for me as they delivered powerful worship music with a passion and anointing that moved many hearts. Our choir group was very active, participating in many concerts around the city where we shared the good news of God's love through songs. Those were memorable times for me as I enjoyed using my gift of music and voice to minister to others.
No Longer Able to Sing
Getting older impacted my voice's strength. When singing now, it resembles a "flog gnaw'' instead of melodic tunes. The vocal chords just can't hit those high notes anymore. It's sad to not be able to use the gift of song the way I once did in my youth, but I have come to accept that seasons change.
Gospel Music is My Preferred Genre
Though pop, hip hop, and afrobeat gained global popularity, I've never fully enjoyed or connected with them. Gospel music is simply my preferred style, since I grew accustomed to it from a young age. Other genres, while widely loved, lack the same appeal for me. Even though secular artists like Davido and Wizkid top the charts regularly, I don't actually listen to their music - I only read about their successes online. Gospel will always be closest to my heart.
Favorite Gospel Artists Today
In recent years, I have come to appreciate the talents of gospel artists like Frank Edward, Moses Bliz, Mercy Chiwo and Dosin Onayikan. The anointing and excellence in their music and ministrations is very evident. They have truly raised the bar for gospel music delivery in Nigeria. I am in awe of their vocal prowess and the depth of inspiration in their songs. These artists top my playlist regularly.
Starting the Day with Gospel Music
There is nothing quite like starting my day with a worship or inspirational song. More often than not, I'll play songs from Frank Edward or Dosin Onayikan early in the morning while getting ready. Their soul-lifting melodies have a way of brightening my mood and setting the right tone for the day ahead. I always feel spiritually energized and ready to face whatever comes my way.
Gospel Music for Life
As long as I draw breath, gospel music will remain a staple in my life. Even in my old age now, it is a source of comfort and strength. No other genre moves me the way gospel does. The messages in these songs line up with my faith and values. I see myself enjoying this kind of uplifting music till the very end. It has been the soundtrack accompanying me through all the seasons of life - the good, the bad and everything in between. For this, I am very grateful.
Conclusion
In conclusion, gospel music has brought me so much joy and inspiration over the decades. It played a big role in my formative years and still does today. Even though I can no longer sing like before, I find fulfillment in listening to worship songs that nourish my soul. I encourage everyone to explore this genre that has the power to minister deeply. A little gospel music every day can surely make our world a little brighter.
