I sometimes upload photos to a stock photo service called photoAC.
I originally used the service to download photos for my own blog (i.e., I was a download user), but one day I suddenly decided that I wanted to contribute photos as well, so I registered as a creator.
I've been posting photos for about 5 years...
I think Shutterstock, Adobe stock, and PIXTA are the most famous stock photo sites. However, many of the contributors to these sites are professional photographers, and I have heard that they have strict screening procedures. I am not a professional, nor am I a student of photography, nor do I have good camera equipment. I am just an amateur who likes to take pictures with my phone, so photoAC is just right for me.
At photoAC, for every photo material downloaded, you earn 3.25 points; once you accumulate 5,000 points or more, you can withdraw them to your bank account at the rate of 1 point = 1 yen. I started contributing photos in the fall of 2019, and because I was a bit overzealous in the beginning, I uploaded about 200 photo materials towards the end of that year.
However, by the beginning of the following year, I got bored and only uploaded very infrequently. Therefore, as of July 2024, the total number of uploads is only 361.... It is said that even 1,000 or 2,000 items is not enough if you want to make money with stock photos. If that is the case, then I must say that this number is quite small after spending almost five years in the business. Still, the photos I posted generated money, albeit a little bit every day, and I have made two withdrawals in the last five years, which means I have earned 10,000 yen.
Most downloaded photos
This time, after logging into My Page for the first time in a while, I noticed that I have about 20 more points to reach the amount available for withdrawal. That means I only need to get 6 more downloads to be able to withdraw the money. I decided to upload a new piece to reach 5,000 points as soon as possible. So, I looked up my work that I had submitted so far to see what kind of photos were being downloaded the most... and I was left with a strange feeling... indescribable!
Ochre Background Material
Of my 361 photos, the most downloaded was this one, “Ochre Background Material”.

This is just a photo of our elevator wall taken with an iPhone and slightly modified. I can't believe this has been downloaded 240 times... The category is background materials. I wonder what it was used for.
Kuzuyu
Second place goes to this "Kuzuyu" (葛湯).

This photo was uploaded in 2019 and is downloaded regularly. It is not a particularly interesting photo, but it has been downloaded 206 times, probably because it was good at conveying the characteristics of the slurpy kuzuyu.
The front door of my parents' house
Third place went to a photo of the front door of my parents' house taken from the inside.

I took this photo because I liked the way the light was dimly shining in, and it was also downloaded 204 times. I am very curious as to what it was used for.
In addition, a surprisingly large number of other photos of the scenery around me were downloaded, including photos of burnt toast, coffee beans that had been smashed on the floor, laundry that had been folded and laid out, and photos of baby limbs. On the other hand, we found that few nature-related photos (e.g., of the sky, plants, flowers, etc.), which are relatively easy for anyone to take, were downloaded.
Conclusion: Who needs what is unknown
Once again, I realized that it is hard to know where and what kind of demand there will be. Nowadays, AI-generated images can be created easily, so I myself rarely download images from this service anymore. Because I feel that there is little difference in the time and effort required to search for an image or to generate an image by typing in the prompts myself.
Incidentally, this site also allows uploading images using AI-generated tools, but I am uploading only photos. It seems that many users want to avoid AI images, as there is a check box on the search page that says "Exclude materials using AI-generated tools".
Not everyone uses AI, on the contrary, some people do not like AI-generated images, and for some applications, photos are better or must be photos. Therefore, I think there is still a certain demand for photo materials. And as for the content of the materials, it is very interesting to see that unexpectedly many photos are downloaded that one wonders what they will be used for.

「photoAC」というストックフォトサービスに、時々写真を投稿しています。
元々は自分のブログに使う写真をダウンロードするために使っていた（＝ダウンロードユーザーだった）のですが、ある時ふと、私も写真を投稿してみたいと思いクリエイターとして登録しました。
ストックフォト歴5年目
ストックフォトといえば、ShutterstockやAdobe stock、PIXTAなどが有名だと思います。ただそれらサイトへの投稿者にはプロのカメラマンが多く、審査も厳しいと聞いています。私はプロでもなければ写真を勉強しているわけでもなく、良いカメラ機材を持っているわけでもありません。ただスマホで写真を撮るのが好きな素人なので、のんびりphotoACがちょうどいいと感じています。
photoACでは、写真素材が1点ダウンロードされる毎に3.25ポイントを獲得できます。5,000ポイント以上貯まると、1ポイント=1円で銀行口座に出金できるしくみです。私が写真投稿を始めたのは2019年の秋で、当初はちょっと張り切っていたため、その年の年末にかけて200枚ほどの写真素材をアップロードしました。
しかし年が明けたころから飽きて失速し始め、2024年7月現在、総アップロード数はたったの361点です・・・。ストックフォトで稼ごうと思ったら1,000点や2,000点でも少ないと言われるそうなので、5年近くの歳月を費やして361点しかアップできていないというのはハッキリ言ってダメダメと言わざるを得ないでしょう・・・。それでも、私が投稿した写真たちは日々少しずつではあるもののお金を生み出してくれて、この5年間の間に2回は出金した、つまり1万円は稼いだことになります。
最もダウンロードされた写真
今回久しぶりにマイページにログインしたところ、あと20ポイントほどで換金可能額に到達することに気づきました。20ポイントということは、あと6回ダウンロードしてもらえれば出金できるということです。早く5,000ポイントに到達するために、新しい作品をアップしてみようかなと考えました。そこで、これまでに投稿した自分の作品のうち、どのような写真がたくさんダウンロードされているのだろうと調べてみたのですが・・・なんともいえない不思議な気持ちになりました。
黄土色の背景素材
おいしそうな食べ物、綺麗な風景写真などの自信作を差し置いて、堂々の第一位はこちらの「黄土色の背景素材」でした。

これ、何かというとうちのエレベーターの壁をiPhoneで撮って、少し加工しただけのものです。これが240回もダウンロードされているなんて…。カテゴリは背景素材です。何に使われたのだろう、めっちゃ気になるよ。。。

第二位は、こちらの「葛湯」。

この写真をアップロードしたのは2019年ですが、いまだにちょこちょこダウンロードされています。特にどうということのない写真ですが、どろっとした感じが伝わるのがよかったのかな、マグカップの上下左右がすべて見切れているにもかかわらず、206回ダウンロードされています。

そして第3位は、実家の玄関を内側から撮った写真です。

ぼんやりと差し込む光の感じがいいなあと思って撮ったものでしたが、204回ダウンロードされました。こちらも一体何に使われているのか非常に気になるところです。

誰が何を必要としているか分からない
改めて、どこにどんな需要があるのか分からないものだなと思いました。
いまはAI生成でどんな画像でも作れてしまうので、私自身はこのサービスで画像をダウンロードすることはほとんどなくなりました。検索してイメージ通りの画像を探すのと、自分でプロンプトを打ち込んで画像を生成するのとではほとんど手間は変わらないような気がするからです。
ちなみにこのサイトではAI生成ツールを使用したイメージもアップロードできますが、私がアップしているのは写真のみ。検索ページにも「AI生成ツール使用素材を除く」のチェックボックスが設けられるなど、AI画像は避けたいというユーザーも少なくないようです。
皆がみんなAIを使うわけではないし、逆にAI生成されたイメージを好まない人もいるし、用途によっては写真がいい、写真でないとダメだということもあるでしょう。なので、まだまだ写真素材には一定の需要があるのだと思います。そしてその素材の内容に関しても、「え、こんなものが・・・？」と思うような写真が意外とダウンロードされるので面白いです。
