The Rap God Buys NFT
An NFT or non-fungible token is a unique digital asset that represents ownership of real-world items like art, video clips and music. While most NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain, other blockchains can implement their own versions of NFTs, like we see with Hivepunks on the Hive blockchain.
NFTs hold a value primarily set by the market and demand and they can be bought and sold just like other physical types of art. It is likely that you have heard of NFTs before, but most people aren't aware of what an NFT really is.
A few months back, on 30 December 2021, the Rap God bought the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT, which cost him 123.45 Ether or approximately 500,000 USD at the time. It would have been roughly 375,000 USD at the current prices. When Marshall Mathers, one of the best selling music artists of all times, changed his social media avatar to the Bored Ape NFT he had bought, it was also a way to signal to the world that he was truly ready to dive into the metaverse for real by joining the exclusive community of elite NFT owners.
The BAYC NFT collection was launched in April 2021 and is limited to 10,000 unique images of apes. Eminem is in good company in the BAYC as celebrities like Jimmy Fallon, Snoop Dogg and Post Malone sits comfortably with their hands on unique ape tokens as well.
Eminem Dives Into The Metaverse
Paying $500,000 USD for something as simple as an "image" might sound weird for some, but with a net worth of $230 Million, Eminem is one of the highest-paid entertainers in the world and doesn't really have to care about money if he don’t want to. He would rather easily be able to recover any potential losses over time anyways, and diving into the metaverse in the way he has, will definitely result in profit.
Even though Eminem bought the Bored Ape just a few months ago, he has been transacting NFTs for a long time. He launched his own beat-inspired animated NFT collection of Stans in April 2021.
Tom MacDonald, an independent Canadian rapper, bought the "Stan's Revenge" NFT for a whopping $100,000 and eventually used the NFT beat produced by Eminem that came with it, for a new song called "Dear Slim" that he dedicated to the Rap God himself.
Tom MacDonald paid 1/5 or roughly 20% of the cost of the Bored Ape that Eminem bought, when he purchased "Stan's Revenge", so I would call Eminem not only the Rap God, but also the future NFT God.
