“I'm going to quit my job,” Julie dropped the already folded bedsheets in her hands to the floor. Her cheeks went from rosy to pale pink in an instant. “No, not like that, I'm going to leave the company.”

He assisted Julie to sit on the bed and sat beside her, placing his hands on her shoulders.
“What's going on, Matt?”
“A lot. I'll try my best to make it as simple as possible.” Julie turned to face him so she could look into his eyes as he spoke. “The company thrives on favoritism, Julie. Everyone else seems to get just about anything because they either know someone at the top, or they're rolling in between sheets with their superiors. I'm not making any progress.”
“Slow down Matt. What exactly are you talking about?”
Matt sighed and took her hands. “I was due for a promotion three years ago, my papers are still in a file with HR being processed” he made a quotation in the air as he spoke the last word “But my younger colleagues got promoted last week. This is the second time this is happening”.
“Why? Is this peculiar to you?” he shook his head.
“There are about three other people I know who are facing this same issue. I don't know, I think I should leave”.
“Matt, we have two kids in this house. We both barely make enough to take care of all our expenses, if you quit we'll be doomed.”
“I don't think so. I want to get a remote job”
Julie withdrew her hands from his and rose to pace. Matt had left his private driving job when she had her second baby because she needed some help around the house and they couldn't afford to hire one. The disadvantage of that was that he had to settle for working with a publishing house that paid almost 2 times less than what the private driving job had offered him.
If he left his job now, Julie wasn't sure she would be able to carry the financial burden of four of them alone.
“Matt, this doesn't sound like a good idea. I don't know what's going on in your company but this isn't a good time to quit” she returned to sit beside him. “April and Jordan should be your priority right now. Even if you want to quit, at least get another job before then”.
Matt shook his head. It wasn't just about getting money for him, it was about securing a future for his family. How many more months or years would he have to endure before he landed a well-paying job? What if he never did?
“Look Julie, I'm thinking of applying for a writing job online. Remote jobs or telecommuting, is simply me working from a location other than the office. This could be from home, or anywhere else with an internet connection. I think it would be easier for us both seeing how you need help in the house”.
She seemed to buy the idea for some minutes.
“This remote job, how long will it take you to get one? And how effective can you be working from the house? What if the kids disturb you?”
Matt had to smile there “Julie, nothing in this world works without proper planning. If we plan towards working with the kids in the house then we can achieve it.”
She rose to pace again, peeking into Jordan’s crib to see if he was still soundly asleep.
“So you're telling me that you can sit here all day and work then get paid. What if you get scammed? You don't know these people, what if you don't get paid even after working?”
Matt sighed. He thought about it as well and the outcome didn't sit well with him, but he felt it was better to do something than sit back in assumption.
“Julie, I want to believe that this is going to be good for us. There are so many risks involved but it's better to give it a try than not to do something at all. If I got promoted at work, I would earn three times my current salary, with other privileges. There's no use staying in such an unhealthy environment”
“Okay, I agree. But could you please get this online job and run it for at least a month before you quit? Let's give this a try.”
Matt took her hands in his again.
“There's no way I can run both jobs Julie, but I promise that I will get a remote job first before I quit this onsite job at the company. Okay?”
She sighed deeply and nodded her head after covering her hand with his, indicating that she was now a party to the remote job idea.
