Welcome to my daily blog. I’ve been wanting to express my views concerning the matter of the 10% tax on winings from Sports betting and lotto. Just recently it was announced that individuals who win must pay 10% of thier winnings to the Government. Meaning if you win a bet of 100ghc you will have to pay a tax of 10ghc to the government. Also if you win 1000 Ghana cedi, a tax of 100 ghc is deducted from your winnings. I mean you get the point now.
I wouldn’t say i didn’t see this coming because at the state in which my country is in right now, they are finding ways and means to milk us for any little money they can get. They first started by asking us to willingly donate towards the building of our national cathedral, but it didnt work. Then they introduced the E-levy system which by the way pissed me off. This system wasn’t quite effective so now they have come up with this 10% tax on all sports betting and Games.
I don’t think they made the right call by taking that huge percentage from people. I mean its just too much. If it were a mere 1% or probably 2%. People wouldn’t fumble and talk about it that much. The Government havent created enough jobs for the youth. So most of thr youth depend on these games for their daily bread. So to come and feed off someone’s success when you havent helped him to get the is just being parasitic in nature.
The problem i have again is that. Now that it has been passed, and im very confident the money will start rolling in, we the citizens our lives aren’t getting better. The cost of prizes wont go back to normal. Hell, they will probably increase. We dont see the money being put into the country. I just feel like they are taking the money from us right into thier pockets.
If you really wanted to the task, why not take only the money from the sports betting companies, its rumored they pay up to 20% of their winnings. Which is crazy considering the fact that you also go ahead to ask the citizens to pay 10%. This is just clear day light robbery if you ask me. I really think the government need to reconsider and change the law a bit. Its not fair to Ghanaians.
How can a country struggling like this offer Free SHS, to its people? Clearly we havent reached that stage as a country but we leave it and then come to impose meaningless policies to milk the citizens for money to maintian the country. I’ve always said this Free SHS is doing us more harm than we can imagine. But clearly others don’t see it. Hopefully a change of government will better our lives financially. Thank you.
