I stopped by a friend's house this evening to check on her. I was suppose to stop at her shop but it was locked so I called and she asked me to come over to her house. I asked her why she wasn't in her shop and she said she had stopped going there for some weeks now because she didn't have funds anymore to stock up her shop. I was shocked because just in July, the shop was so full with goods that I was so happy for her.
When I asked her what happened, she told me how people wrecked it for her including her own husband. It became clear to me that she operated the shop with her emotions leading her. No business survives if you are emotional. You need to be heart-hardened if you want your business to stand the test of time. If you let yourself to be controlled by your emotions, then you are just giving room for your business to fall.
How does emotions wreck a business?
As we continued our conversation, she told me how her husband will come into her shop and pick some things without paying. But since he was her husband, she felt it was his right and so she didn't ask for money. Her family members and some friends too did the same thing. Sometimes someone will come and tell her plenty stories that will melt her heart and she will package all the person needs and give to the person. Those persons who even buy on credit ends up not paying because according to her, she doesn't have the mind to go and collect her own money from them. Instead she gives the excuse that the economy is bad.
I am sure some people are like this friend of mine and they are struggling to stay in business. I just want to say that if you want to succeed as a business owner, don't let your emotions rule you. You need to be in total control of your business and set the boundaries as much as you can. If a family member wants to take anything from the shop, you should account for it. Sometimes when I see something I like from what I sell, I try as much as I can to pay for it.
You have to discipline yourself if you want to stay in business.
