LeoThreads is new to many people, including Hivers. Here are 10 things Hivers new to LeoThreads can expect.

1️⃣ Character Limit
If you're used to using Hive's first microblogging dApp D.Buzz, you're sed to using 280 characters per buzz. This is in keeping with Twitter's own 280-character limit.
LeoThreads opted for a 240-character limit per thread. It can take some getting used to (especially if you're in the habit of posting threadstorms), but it's more than the 140 characters Twitter had in another age.
2️⃣ Easy Access to Emojis
Initially, LeoThreads didn't have a widget for easy access to emojis. In this way, it was similar to the LeoFinance front-end.
Being one of the most-requested items for an upgrade, LeoThreads incorporated an emoji widget on its data entry form. As a bonus, the emoji widget slipstreamed its way into the LeoFinance front-end.
3️⃣ View 1st reply to a thread
At LeoThreads, the first reply to one's thread is included on the scrolling page. This 1st reply can generate more interest in a thread than if it wasn't on screen.
4️⃣ Trending over 7 Days
During the early days of LeoThreads in Summer 2022, Trending Topics showed a running total of topics going back to Day 1. In a later upgrade, Trending Topics was redone to feature topics and hastags going back 7 days
Speaking of hashtags....
| 4️⃣🅰️ Hashtags Are Case-Sensitive |
|---|
LeoThreads will display hastags on the scrolling page in lowercase letters, but in both the Trending Topics list and the URL associated for the topic the hashtag will appear as it was entered. This means that hashtags such as #XLSref and #xlsref are considered different.If you're viewing threads with another front-end (such as Ecency), the hashtags will appear as originally entered. If it looks as if threads are missing for some topic, try the other case (or cases) for the hashtag. |
5️⃣ Virtually Unrestricted Microblogging Topics
Long form blog posts at LeoFinance remain "limited" to finance and cryptocurrency; that hasn't changed.
However
--the LeoThreads microblogging platform will allow essentially whatever D.Buzz allows for buzzes. The only restriction is whatever appears in the fine print (because there is always fine print somewhere).
This is just a sample of the threads we can see on LeoThreads:
- Photos for family, food, pets, travel, and many other topics appear in threads.
- Promotion of content and offerings-- ours and others.
- Play-to-earn threads for Splinterland, Rising Star, and other P2E games and topics.
Threads link on the initial Profile Page |
6️⃣ View Your Own Threads via LeoFinance Profile Page
Our profile pages at most front-ends normally include links for Blog, Comments, Replies, etc.
Due to the way LeoThreads was designed, threads here are simply Comments when viewed with other front-ends. The LeoFinance operates the same way, but with a twist.
Threads Page displayed |
Besides the behavior similar to other front-ends, LeoFinance also has a link labeled Threads. Using this special link lets us use the LeoThreads interface to access our threads.
When we reply to other people's thread replies, this is where we go to do that.
7️⃣ Earn Both LEO and HIVE
Like at D.Buzz, we earn HIVE as author rewards and curator rewards when we use LeoThreads.
Unlike at D.Buzz, we also earn LEO, the Layer 2 token native to LeoFinance.
Post once, earn twice. What a blockchain!
8️⃣ Post Discovery on LeoThreads Courtesy of Veews
Recently the blog discovery dApp Veews launched courtesy of Team CTP at ClickTrackProfit.
From what I have discovered about Veews, there is a widget there which lets one promote posts at LeoThreads.
This is perhaps the second instance of LeoThreads being included in some way by other applications.
Here is the first:
9️⃣ GM:FRENS-- The Interchain Token
Crypto has many terms unique to it. One of these terms is FRENS, for "friends". I hadn't seen it while on Hive or while using Layer 2 dApps.
Somehow, it made its way to LeoThreads.
At first, it was just the greeting GM:FRENS ("Good morning, friends"). Quickly it became the hashtag #gmfrens, and it become one of the greatest trending topics at LeoThreads.
is credited with popularizing GM:FRENS on LeoThreads, and he took it to another level: he minted the interchain token GM.
Type #gmfrens in LeoThreads, earn GM tokens on WAX blockchain |
|---|
Initially this was done manually. Eventually a bot was created for the purpose of tracking GM mined via #gmfrens.
Needless to say, #gmfrens had become the most popular trending topic on LeoThreads.
Just as POSH tokens are awarded to people who post LeoFinance content at Twitter, GM tokens are awarded to people who have a WAX Cloud Wallet address. No wallet, no GM.
EDIT widget from one's own thread |
🔟 Ability to Edit
It's safe to say that at this time Twitter has the edge over LeoThreads in many ways: longevity, active users, total users, influencers, etc.
But does Twitter have the Edit Button?
Ah, no.
Just as D.Buzz has its edit feature, LeoThreads added the edit feature in one of the earlier upgrades. This is one reason why editing threads needs to be done using the LeoThreads interface rather than a generic dApp or even the LeoFinance long form blogging dApp.
At the bottom of each thread is a line of widgets for commenting, upvoting, sharing, and downvoting.
Downvoting is accessed using the ellipsis widget, …. On our own threads, the ellipsis widget is also used to access EDIT.
If you also use Twitter, see how Twitter-only users respond when you ask them how they edit their tweets. It could be fun seeing how they reply.
Just My Two Sats
LeoThreads has come a long way since it was released in early August 2022. As of December 2022, there are at least 10 things
Hivers new to LeoThreads should know about:
1️⃣ Each thread has a 240-character limit;
2️⃣ Emojis are accessible from the edit toolbar (with GIFs in the pipeline);
3️⃣ For any thread with replies, the 1st reply is visible on the scroll page;
4️⃣ Trending Topics for 7 Days are displayed;
5️⃣ Threads about nearly any topic are welcome; not welcome are those in the usual fine print;
6️⃣ Our profile pages at LeoFiannce have a link for Threads;
7️⃣ Post once, earn twice (both LEO and HIVE);
8️⃣ The Veews dApp from Team CTP lets people share links to LeoThreads
9️⃣ GM:FRENS is all over LeoThreads, but for a good reason: mine #gmfrens at leoThreads, earn GM tokens on WAX blockchain
🔟 You can EDIT your own threads-- does Twitter let you edit tweets?
There may be more things we should be aware of regarding LeoThreads. For anyone starting with LeoThreads, these should be enough to make using LeoThreads a fun experience.
