88% of new cars sold in Norway are electric vehicles (EV). This percentage includes plug-in hybrids. Norway subsidizes the purchase of EV's by waiving vehicle import duties and car registration taxes for EV's. In addition, EV's enjoy free parking. This makes owning an EV much more attractive.
Norway is country rich in energy. It has abundant fossil fuels and has a highly developed hydropower base. It can easily afford the subsidies. However, by encouraging the use of EV's, it is encouraging the mining of of lithium and other metals which are not necessarily clean enterprises.
