Osmosis is a blockchain and currently has one protocol. The protocol is a decentralized exchange where native token Osmosis can be swapped to a lot of different Cosmos IBC tokens such as ATOM, LUNA, JUNO, UMEE, and so on.
There has been a significant decline in price on its native token OSMO for the past few weeks but the protocol continues with updates and recently introduced its Frontier format.

OSMO and Non IBC tokens
As Osmosis developers have achieved great success in swaps and pools of IBC tokens for almost a year now since its introduction, the developers are trying to add some flavor to the protocol. Frontier platform will allow users who have non IBC tokens to be able to invest on Osmosis. For instance ETH and CW20 tokens can be swap and pool on Frontier.
Primary Osmosis Versus Frontier Osmosis
What is really going on is that any pools that people wish to apply onto Osmosis can do so through Frontier. A direct swap of OSMO to wrapped ETH for instance. That pool of OSMO : ETH can then be supplied on Frontier and let the governance vote on the a pool to be incentivize and in turn if voting leans toward an approval the pool can move over to the primary osmosis platform.
Conclusions
Osmosis main platform has done well in securing users assets and allow the swap processes to work smoothly between different IBC tokens. Now with trying to integrate tokens beyond IBC the Osmosis developers have developed Frontier to let it run as an "experiment" to make sure it would not effect the primary platform.
Frontier is a real platform where users are free to develop on pools beyond that of IBC tokens. This leads to vast opportunities for Osmosis to be a DEX beyond that of Cosmos related tokens. Yet the developers were wise enough to make this integration of outside Cosmos chains to be separate and tested first before allowing it to be integrated to the main https://app.osmosis.zone/pools
I personally have never seen a protocol go through this much to protect its investors funds and make sure its original working platform is not effected with upgrades. Frontier is its stand alone platform, but closely tied to the overall Osmosis ecosystem.
