In just 100 days, Johannesburg will host a moment that’s been decades in the making, the first-ever G20 Leaders’ Summit on the African soil. South Africa, holding the G20 presidency, has started preparing towards November with a sense of urgency and pride. Out of 132 scheduled meetings, 87 have already taken place, laying the groundwork for what promises to be a defining summit.
The theme of the summit is “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability”. It’s a call to action. South Africa is determined to steer global attention toward issues that have long plagued the Global South: widening inequality, crushing sovereign debt, and the need for inclusive economic reform. President Cyril Ramaphosa (The South African President) has made his intentions clear by appointing Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz to lead a G20 taskforce focused on wealth disparities. The hope is that this summit won’t just be symbolic one but a transformative one.
Will Trump attend the Summit??
The biggest question is will U.S. President Donald Trump attend the Summit??. His vocal criticism of South Africa’s land reform policies has strained diplomatic ties, and he’s hinted at sending a representative instead. South Africa, however, remains unafraid. According to the International Relations Minister Ronald Lamola, he has made it clear that the summit will go ahead, Trump or no Trump.
This moment is about more than politics. It’s about Africa stepping into a leadership role on the global stage, not as a guest, but as a host. The continent has long been spoken about in global forums since Berlin Conference till now, but now it’s speaking for itself. Johannesburg is preparing not just for a summit, but for history.
