There has been some outrage in the UK press recently about how Rishi Sunak's wife has used non-dom status to avoid paying UK tax on her global earnings.
It's estimated that the Sunaks' net work is around £200 million which puts them 'up there' with the Super rich rather than just being your average 'millionaires next door', and this also makes Sunak the richest cabinet member.
Most of their wealth comes from his wife's holdings in her father's company, which is worth $3.5 billion, and it's estimated that she's avoided paying up to £20 million over the last decade in UK taxes because of her choice to have non-dom status.
NB for a member of the global elite living in Britain this is all pretty standard - you have a global income and you use non-dom status to avoid paying taxes in Britain on your world wide income, while you still pay taxes to the UK tax authority on anything you earn in Britain.
The issue with the Sunaks doing this is that he is Chancellor of the UK and has been the face of increasing taxed on ordinary working people recently, and generally residing over economic policies which make the ordinary people, trapped in the UK and trapped under its tax regime, pay for the cost of the Pandemic and the war in Ukraine, while he and his global elite friends remain able to avoid these costs by taking advantage of preferential tax rules in whatever country they choose to register for paying tax!
There are 50K non-doms in the UK....
A recent report by the LSE revealed that there are around 50K non-doms in the UK - 3/10 people living in London with income of more than £5 million claim non-dom status - so this really is a rich- persons club - compared to just 3/1000 who have income of less than £100K (it's just not worth it I guess).
Unsurprisingly most of these non-doms live in the more expensive parts of London - Kensington and Chelsea for example, so they are super concentrated, and are mainly from Western Europe, America, and increasingly India.
It's very probable that Sunak and his wife are in 'good company' in their social circles and have no real concept of what life is like for ordinary folk......
It's just a very unfortunate choice to pick one of these elite to be chancellor, talk about a lack of Tory sensitivity.....
