Even if it's your hobby, beginning a garden comes with a price, just like any other business. If you are not knowledgeable, gardening might become pricey.
In the beginning of my gardening career, I can still clearly remember making a lot of mistakes that cost me money I never anticipated having to spend.
I made a number of mistakes, including purchasing seeds from the neighborhood local market.
The purchase of seeds from the neighborhood lical market was extremely affordable, so at first it might have seemed like the best course of action. However, I had no idea that this would end up costing me more in the long run.
When I got seeds from a certified source, they were quite expensive more than that of the local market, but I bought less and in some cases never used any pesticide, which helped reduce the cost of my gardening.
What happened was that the seed I bought at the local market was low in resistance level to some insect pest attack, which made me invest more in pesticide and increase the cost of my gardening.
In order to succeed as a gardener, you must understand how to cut costs. Just like in any other business model, cutting costs should be one of your top priorities.
Some gardeners don't keep track of how much it costs them to grow a particular fruit or vegetable, so they don't see the need to cut costs in their garden.
Both direct and indirect costs are associated with gardening, so you must reduce them in order to make your project profitable.
There are a number of strategies to reduce the cost of gardening, and for me they include:
• Buy certified seeds. Starting your garden from seeds can be a very rewarding process because you can watch a plant grow from a seed into a beautiful plant. However, the seeds you use for this process must come from a reliable source. Certain diseases and pest infestations can be tolerated by some seeds while others cannot. Since this is one of the ongoing struggles a gardener has with nature, and you can only prevail if your plant resistances level is strong, buying seeds from a certified source can end up saving you money over buying seeds without built-in resistance level.
• Composting your own waste:
When it comes to gardening, you cannot ignore the importance of the soil. Compost improves the soil for the plant, which results in good yields. The good news is that you can manufacture your own compost for your garden because purchasing compost may be pretty pricey.
Kitchen waste and scraps can be utilized to create a quality compost, which will lower the cost of gardening.
• Save seeds: Purchasing seeds near the end of the planting season might help you avoid paying for fresh seeds and ensure that the seeds you buy still have the desired level of resistance.
Personally, I don't do this because the pack of seeds I saved for the following session has more than enough seeds.
• Use recycled materials for your garden. It's fun to use used containers or plastic that should have been thrown away in your garden. It helps you save money and protects the environment by preventing the use of plastics that would have caused issues.
As an illustration, I once used a 10-liter plastic bucket with a hole that I couldn't use again to store water to grow a plant.
• Attract beneficial insects: By attracting beneficial insects like lady bugs, which can eat up other dangerous insects like white flies, you can lower the cost of using pesticides to kill the harmful insects. This can help you save money on gardening expenses.
