What is the worst financial advice or pick you have ever received?
I was once told that it would be a great idea to buy this stock called Geron. It was trading around $5.50 and there was big news set to come out about their blockbuster drug Imetelstat and how it was actually about to prevent the onset of cancer and tumors in patients.
Here is a quote from their site on the drug:
These data showed that imetelstat: Inhibits telomerase activity, and can shorten telomeres. Inhibits the proliferation of a wide variety of tumor types, including solid and hematologic, in cell culture systems and rodent xenograft models of human cancers, impacting the growth of primary tumors and reducing metastases. - Geron
So, as any 18 year old would do, I believed in this drug pretty much blindly thinking of how great it would be to be supporting and investing in the group that would stop one of the world's worst health problems. I went just about all in with the money that I had at the time.
Well... Following the FDA saying that they needed to do more trials before the drug could even begin to be thought about being put to use, the stock price tanked. Here is what it looked like:
That sharp plummet down happened all in one day and they have never recovered since. I obviously ended up selling and cutting losses and that is why it goes down as the worst financial advice I have ever gotten. I think I lost somewhere between 50-65% of my investment in minutes!
