Keeping up with my coin collection series, this new post is about another 50 drachmas coin featuring the portrait of great Solon (ca. 638 – 558 BC), a famous lawmaker and poet of Ancient Athens.
The lettering
Obverse:
ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ = HELLENIC REPUBLIC
50 = 50
ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ = DRACHMAS
1982 = 1982
Reverse:
ΣΟΛΩΝ = SOLON
The coin
This piece belongs to the Third Modern Drachma coins, from the period of the Third Hellenic Republic. My coin was released in 1980, nut on Numista I only found the page of the 1982-1984 coins. It is made of copper and nickel, weighs 12 gr, has a diameter of 31 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. It is a relatively big and heavy coin as you can see in the photos.
