Data is one of the strongest assets in this modern world. The usage of details is necessary in order to communicate with relevance. We also need to understand the fact that the misuse of data is a very significant issue that we should be thinking about. It may have more severe consequences than we can imagine. Data is a powerful asset that ill-intentioned individuals can use in many unfavorable ways. It can even be used against you. Therefore, it is always suggested to be extremely careful with all sorts of data that we possess. If we remain careful enough, it will be difficult for us to get lured into trouble by those who are looking to exploit our information.
The infamous hacking event of Twitter in 2020 involved the hacking of several prominent figures' accounts. These accounts were used for various purposes, mainly involving extortion-based activities. Some of the victims included US President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, as well as individuals like Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk. Moreover, the accounts of major crypto exchanges such as Binance, Bitfinex, and Coinbase were also affected. Using these accounts, the hacker promoted fake bitcoin giveaways and managed to gain over $100,000 in crypto through these fraudulent activities.
In addition, the hacker employed another technique known as "SIM Swap Attack" to steal cryptocurrencies from a Manhattan-based crypto company. The stolen coins included Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), and Ethereum (ETH), all of which were worth roughly $800,000. The hacker then laundered the funds by transferring them from one exchange to another using various accounts. The hacker specifically targeted high-profile individuals on these networks, allowing them to accumulate such a significant amount of cryptocurrency.
The hacker pleaded guilty and is currently serving a 5-year prison sentence in the United States. In addition to the jail time, the hacker has also been sentenced to three additional years under supervised release and has been ordered to pay back the illegally obtained funds, which amount to over $800,000.
The hackers used complex technology to breach the security layers of these institutions. This raises concerns since these institutions are typically highly secured. If they can be breached, it becomes even more important for regular people to consider their own security measures. Often, individuals live without any kind of security systems to protect their information and are frequently tricked into sharing sensitive data without being aware of the risks.
Even the authorities involved in solving these cases require a significant amount of time to track down the culprits behind these activities. This highlights the difficulty faced by those in charge when attempting to track down these malicious actors worldwide. Therefore, it is essential for us to take control of our online presence and the security risks that surround us. We should take adequate measures to prevent any breaches or mishaps that may occur.
It is not possible to be 100% safe, but we can make an effort to avoid falling into traps. This can be achieved by following basic habits such as not sharing sensitive information on untrusted websites, refraining from clicking on random links, and using antivirus software whenever we use a PC to add an extra layer of protection.
Cyberhacking is a significant issue worldwide, resulting in financial losses worth billions of dollars every year. It is a major problem that is difficult to tackle because not only is it challenging to trace the source, but also it is hard to prepare against constantly evolving cyber-attacks. However, we should implement whatever precautions we can to safeguard ourselves, as we never know what might save us.
