In the embers of a dying fire lays the energy for the heart to begin again. — ShadowsPub
The word “ember” comes from the Old English word "æmerge," meaning “ashes”. Embers can burn at temperatures up to 1000F (538C) and retain that heat for hours or even days. They are a crucial component in the blacksmith’s forge to be able to heat metal.
In nature, embers from a fire can be carried on the wind igniting new fires far from their source. This past summer Canadians have seen unprecedented wildfires across the country. The smoke was so intense it drifted far from the flames, even reaching Europe.
Metaphorically, embers are heart of our emotions. They hold the spark for the heart to keep going through even the toughest of times. We go through times when it feels like our will to live is being drained away. Like a dying fire, the will to live is contained within the embers waiting for the spark to ignite the heart and return with the will and energy to engage again.
Many think of God or the Divine looking down at creation from above, from Heaven. They miss the divine dwelling as the spark within, gently tending to the flame and embers of our life.
The divine spark is not passive, it’s an active participant through all our challenges, hardships and endings. The divine spark nurtures the embers making them unextinguishable with whispers of hope, encouragement and will to survive. It cradles and protects our resilience and essence.
The ember of a fire appears to be the remnant of something that once was. The life spark remaining within them is an example of the resiliance and nature of energy. Energy doesn’t die, it merely transforms. When the embers of our life die here on earth, the energy of our being passes away from earth and returns to source, transformed.
In many ways ember is a metaphor for our soul.
