Asked about the policy, Musk said on Twitter that those unwilling to abide by the new rules could go elsewhere.
"Everyone at Tesla will have to spend at least 40 hours in the office every week, and if that doesn't happen, we will consider it your resignation," the email said. The emails added that staff would have to report working at one of the company's head offices.
Mr Musk added that he would personally consider any request for exemption from the policy.
