The genuine beginnings of US gold coins from before 1933 may be traced all the way back to the 18th century. The first piece of legislation to authorize the manufacturing of US coins was the Coinage Act of 1792. The Act not only mandated coin production by the newly founded US Mint, but it also specified which coins would be produced and their face values. The Quarter Eagle, Half Eagle, and Eagle were required by the Act of 1792 to have face values of $2.5, $5, and $10, respectively.
The US $5 Gold was in a plastic sleeve, so I transferred into a airtite capsule to protect it from the elements.
1880 US Gold $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, AU
From 1839 through 1907, the $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle was legal tender. The Liberty Half Eagle has a substantially higher gold content than other circulating coins because its mintage period was before 1933.
Coin Highlights:
Actual gold content of from .2418 oz.
Purity of .900 fine gold.
Issued by the US Mint with a $5 (USD) face value.
Features neoclassical designs from Christian Gobrecht.
In AU (Almost Uncirculated) condition.
The Liberty Half Eagle, like other $5 Half Eagles, depicts a bald eagle holding a pair of arrows in its talons while supporting an olive branch. But the eagle on the Liberty Half Eagle has been depicted in great clarity. The national bird is presented in a realistic manner and details like the complex texture of its feet and feathers. A scroll over the eagle's head has the coin's denomination written out.
Christian Gobrecht made the decision to reinterpret earlier Lady Liberty pictures in a neoclassical style. Liberty is shown in profile in Gobrecht's artwork, her ornately styled hair adorned with an engraved tiara. Her appearance, including her hairstyle, was based on early Greco-Roman depictions of goddesses and ladies. In addition to the coin's mintage year, his design features a ring of thirteen stars around the coin's edge.
From The Numista Catalog:
Due to the Liberty Half Eagle's simultaneous production at all seven US mints and its distinctive mint markings, it has become a collectors' favorite.
This 1880 US Gold $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle coin is guaranteed to be in AU (Almost Uncirculated) condition.
