I am so familiar with this bridge. My entire middle and high school years, through my graduate work, until I bought my first home in the North Bay... I lived in San Francisco.
To mark the bridge's opening, the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Half Dollar was introduced in 1936.
1936 Bay Bridge Commemorative Silver Half Dollar
A silver half dollar was released to mark the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge's opening. Known by most as the "Bay Bridge Half Dollar," this issue was among the most well-liked among the many commemorative coins that were introduced that year.
The reverse features the image of the bridge with Yerba Buena Island and East Bay Hills in the background and the iconic Ferry Tower in the foreground.
Jacques Schnier, an artist from San Francisco, designed the coins. The remarkable thing about the reverse design is that there are almost no fully smooth fields. A modernistic design is used to present the sky and the sea.
Jacques Schnier (1898β1988) was a Romanian-born American artist, sculptor, author, educator, and engineer. He was a sculpture professor at the University of California, Berkeley from 1936 to 1966.1
The state symbol of California, the grizzly bear, is depicted on the obverse design. The obverse inscriptions are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and HALF DOLLAR.
The California grizzly bear is one of the state's most visible and enduring symbols, adorning both the state flag and seal. The Bear Flag first flew in 1846 as a symbol of the short-lived California Republic. A second version was adopted as the state flag by the state legislature in 1911.2

A maximum mintage of 200,000 pieces was permitted; the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Celebration Coin Committee placed an order for 100,000 coins, stating that this was the only quantity they planned to produce. The San Francisco Mint was used to produce coins.
Coins were sold for a price of $1.50 each via mail order and at the booths at the bridge entrances, where customers could drop by to purchase them. When the sales ended in 1937, the remaining coins that were unsold were burned. Only 71,424 pieces of the 1936 Bay Bridge Half Dollar were distributed.
The 1936 Bay Bridge coins are still available at affordable prices through gem grades.
The current going price for a 1936-S Bay Bridge Commemorative Silver Half Dollar coin is $239.99 in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) state.
