In 2009 Amnesty International reported the following message about more than 24,0000 disappeared Tamils in the hands of Sri Lankan armed forces:
"Aug. 30, is the International Day of the Disappeared, observed by Amnesty International and other human rights groups around the world to remember the disappeared and to press for justice for the victims of enforced disappearance and their families. An “enforced disappearance” occurs when agents of the state arrest a person and the state then denies any knowledge of the person’s status or whereabouts. Over the past several decades, Sri Lanka has experienced tens of thousands of enforced disappearances, most of which remain unresolved. Most of those responsible for these enforced disappearances have never been held accountable. Please remember the disappeared today, especially those in Sri Lanka"
Since then the governments of Sri Lanka have said nothing about it until recently where government officials including the president and the prime minister have simply said that there is no one in detention and all disappeared persons are probably dead as if it were a trivial matter.
The present Sri Lankan president and prime minister were directly involved and responsible for these forced disappearances in the past will never take any action against officers in the armed forces.
On this day, We can only hope that the international communities, the UN, and governments will take this matter in their hands and bring justice to this crime against humanity.
